Five Central Catholic players make all-state; Steel Valley gets player and coach honors

Written by Mike White on .

The Central Catholic football team has its own "Fab 5" on the all-state football team.

The Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State Teams for Class 2A, 4A and 6A were released this morning. A total of 16 WPIAL players made the teams, including five from Central Catholic.

The five from Central Catholic are quarterback Troy Fisher, running back J.J. Younger, defensive linemen C.J. Thorpe and Kurt Hinish, and linebacker David Adams.

Overall, eight WPIAL players made the 6A team. Quarterback Phil Jurkovec and receiver Raymond Falcone of Pine-Richland were selected along with North Allegheny offensive lineman Josh Lugg.

Three Thomas Jefferson plays made the 4A team, while two from Steel Valley and two from Neshannock made the 2A team. In addition, Steel Valley's DeWayne Murray was selected the 2A Player of the Year while Steel Valley coach Rod Steele was named the 2A Coach of the Year.

Steel Valley had a season never seen before in Pennsylvania high school football. The Ironmen were the first Pennsylvania team to win every game - regular season and playoffs - by the "mercy rule." Under the rule, the clock runs continuously in the second half when a team gets ahead by 35 points or more. Murray (pictured) ran for more than 2,000 yards and finished his career as the WPIAL's sixth all-time leading rusher.

Here are the complete all-state teams for 2A, 4A and 6A. The 1A, 3A and 5A teams were released Monday.
