Friday night rewind: Wade's play makes ESPN .... game highlights and thoughts

Written by Mike White on .

Notes, anecdotes and thoughts from the seventh Friday of the high school football season:

Lamont Wade made ESPN Friday night.

Wade was super in Clairton's 52-16 victory against Aliquippa. But one play gained national acclaim.

Wade had a 73-yard touchdown run in which he hurdled over a would-be tackler, landed on his feet and took off down the sideline for a score. It ended up on ESPN Sportscenter's top 10 plays of the night.

Ya know, in high school there is a rule that runners are not permitted to jump over a defender. But there is some gray area with the rule, about whether a defender already is on the ground. I've seen it called sometimes, and not called other times.

Whether it should've been a penalty or not, the bottom line is the play was terrific. If you want to see it, check out the highlights of the game below from the Post-Gazette web site. The highlights include comments from the coaches and Wade.

Wade, by the way, now is over 1,000 yards rushing for the season, and get this: He is averaging 16.1 yards a carry.

Most on Aliquippa

The 52 points scored by Clairton were the fifth-most ever scored against Aliquippa since the school became known as Aliquippa in 1930. First, there was Woodlawn High School, which started football in 1910. That became Harding High School in 1925, and Harding became Aliquippa in 1930.

Since 1930, the only teams to score more than 50 points on Aliquippa are:

1931 - Washington 54, Aliquippa 6

1970 - New Castle 53, Aliquippa 0

1970 - East Liverpool 56, Aliquippa 24

2007 - Jeannette 70, Aliquippa 49

Derry still perfect

OK, Derry is for real. I'll say it after Derry roughed up Mount Pleasant, 34-14. Derry is 7-0 for the first time since 1983. That year, Derry started 7-0, but lost to Greensburg Central Catholic, 20-6, in Week 8.

With games left against Ellwood City, Waynesburg and McGuffey, Derry has an excellent chance at finishing the regular season undefeated. That has never happened in the history of Derry Area.

Derry Township High School merged with Derry Borough at some point many, many years ago. The only other undefeated regular season in the district came in 1930. But that was by Derry Township.

Some thoughts

**** Yes, Pine-Richland misses QB Phil Jurkovec, who is done for the season with a thumb injury. But did you see that backup Max Devinney led all WPIAL passers last night 294 yards, completing 19 of 41? The percentage wasn't high, but Devinney obviously has talent. And coach Eric Kasperowicz's offense is a great system for a QB.

But Pine-Richland's worry isn't at QB. It should be defense. The Rams lost to Peters Township, 32-27. Pine-Richland is allowing 29 points a game.

And by the way, should they just engrave Central Catholic's name on the WPIAL championship trophy now?

**** North Allegheny quarterback Ethan Maenza is unheralded, but I'll say one of the best playmakers around.

**** Monessen is 1-6? Wow. When has it ever been this bad for the Greyhounds?

**** I'm not saying it's QB Cam Tarrant's fault, but boy has that passing game at Penn Hills slowed down lately.

In the first four games, Tarrant threw for 1,441 yards.  In the past three, he has thrown for 449. But Penn Hills isn't throwing as much. Why? Not sure. But in the first four games, Tarrant averaged 33 attempts a game. In the past three, he has averaged 18 attempts.

**** Everyone always knew this, but this season just reaffirms it: Coach Bob Palko and his staff are extraordinary. West Allegheny wasn't all that impressive in Class 5A early in the season. But the Indians again are strong and were awfully impressive with what they did to Upper St. Clair.

**** Upper St. Clair was ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. But standout RB-DB Thomas Vissman didn't play against West A. He has been out with a foot injury. He might not have made up a 26-point difference, but he helps a great deal. USC doesn't have a chance at a WPIAL title without Vissman. The Panthers need him back.

Lastly, check out highlights below of West Allegheny's defeat of Upper St. Clair, with comments:
