WPIAL AAAA girls championship live blog - Bethel Park wins first title

Written by Mike White on .

Live blog from tonight's WPIAL Class AAAA girls championship between Chartiers Valley and Bethel Park.

In case you missed it, earlier today Beaver Falls won the Class AA boys title with a 61-33 victory against Burrell. Check out the live blog from that game.

FINAL: Bethel Park 48, Chartiers Valley 36

First girls basketball championship for Bethel Park. Mariah Penascino led with 15 points. Harper Zimmer 11. Megan Marecic had seven points and 11 rebounds.

For Chartiers Valley, Jenna Devinney had nine points, all on 3-pointers.

8:11 p.m. - Looking like Bethel Park will get first WPIAL girls title in school history. Nice for Jonna Burke. She's done a great job building a perennially strong program. Only missing piece of the puzzle was a WPIAL title. Looks like she'll get it. Bethel Park ahead, 39-29, with 1:22 left.

8:06 p.m. - Jenna Devinney hits third 3-pointer for CV. Cuts lead to 36-29 with 2:31 left.

This place starting to get pretty full for next game.

7:56 p.m. - Char Valley cut it to 25-19 but 3-pointer by Harper Zimmer for BP makes it 28-19.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Bethel Park 25, Chartiers Valley 16

8:01 p.m. - Bethel Park on a run, leads 35-23 with 3:50 left. No way Char Valley coming back from this.

7:55 p.m. Record for fewest points in WPIAL girls final is 19 by West Mifflin in 1997. Hopefully, Char Valley can break that.

7:46 p.m. - Bethel Park has opened up 23-14 lead. You want offense? Might need to wait for next game.

This is heading for the lowest-scoring Class AAAA final since the class was started in 1983-84 season. Previous low was 68 points in 2004 final. New Castle beat Oakland Catholic, 36-32.

HALFTIME: Bethel Park 18, Chartiers Valley 11

Chartiers Valley shot 20 percent (3 of 15) in first half and had 10 turnovers. Bethel Park shot 9 of 21. Just can't see Char Valley winning this game. Not enough offensively.

7:23 p.m. - OK, Jenna Devinney hits 3 for CV. Now 14-9 Bethel.

7:21 p.m. - Who will score fewer points in first half today???? Burrell boys or Char Valley girls. Burrell scored 8. Char Valley stuck on 6 with 3:30 left in half.

Shoutout to Xavier University assistant Moe Hester, who apparently might be following this wildly popular blog tonight. Former Bethel Park standout.

7:17 p.m. - Harper Zimmer scores again and it's 14-6 Bethel.

Ha ha. Usually fans always yell cliches at officials. Wish I had a dollar all these years for "Hey ref, you're missin' a good game."

But I just heard a pretty good one from a fan behind me. "Hey ref, you got too much sun today."

7:15 p.m. - Char Valley was 1 for 7 from field in first quarter. Harper Zimmer six points in first quarter for Bethel. Bethel shot 6 of 11.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Bethel Park 12, Chartiers Valley 6

I thought this game might be low scoring. Both teams play pretty good defense, and the Class AAAA playoffs overall have lacked much scoring this season.

7:12 p.m. - Bethel Park always good on the defensive side. Now leading, 12-6.

7:06 p.m. - Bethel Park leading, 6-3, with four minutes left in first quarter.

6:50 p.m. - Game time in about 10 minutes.

If you plan on coming for the New Castle-Hampton game next, you might want to get here soon. WPIAL says it might be sold out later tonight.

Shame this girl-boy doubleheader couldn't be at Consol.
