Eight WPIAL basketball teams make state rankings

Written by Mike White on .

Now this is a great weekend.

High school basketball season kicks off around Pennsylvania - and this the weekend of the PIAA football semifinals.

I'm saying all three WPIAL football teams left make it to the title games. I say Clairton and Aliquippa win fairly easily. North Allegheny will also advance, although I don't know if they win by mercy rule this week.

Now for some basketball. Below are the first state basketball rankings from Eric Epler and Co. at the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Eight WPIAL teams are ranked in their respective classifications. The highest-ranked team from the WPIAL is Lincoln Park at No. 2 in Class A.

I don't know if I've ever been able to say this before: Mars is in the state rankings.Yep, the Planets are No. 7 in Class AAA.

Before we get to the rankings, a couple notes:

* The most interesting game tonight might be Hampton vs. Penn-Trafford in the Penn-Trafford Tournament. Penn-Trafford is pretty good. Hampton is ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA, but the Talbots could be without 6-6 Colin Luther (concussion).

* A possible matchup tomorrow night would be Beaver Falls vs. New Castle in the championship of the New Castle Tournament, but I don't know if we'll see that. New Castle is most definitely the favorite against Perry tonight, but Beaver Falls vs. West Middlesex? Beaver Falls might be without standout junior guard Elijah Cottrill for a couple weeks because of a stress fracture. West Middlesex has one of the better players in Western Pennsylvania in Matt Dogan. West Middlesex beat Beaver Falls in this tournament a year ago.
