New Castle senior Shawn Anderson hopes to play Divisioin I college basketball at the Naval Academy. He plans to make one stop after high school, though.
Anderson will attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island for a year before going to the Academy. Anderson is a 6-foot-3 guard-forward and one of the top seniors in the WPIAL. He averaged 18 points and seven rebounds last season and needs only 110 points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Anderson was recruited by the Naval Academy coaches.
"Their coaches, after being there for a year or two, just feel like guys can be more successful by taking their prep school route, because you have to get acclimated to a really unique situation," said New Castle coach Ralph Blundo. "It's a good thing for Shawn because he's a young 17-year-old. He'll still be 17 when he graduates."
Also, New Castle senior guard Brandon Domenick will be playing on the Division II college level next season. Domenick has decided to attend Gannon.
New Castle will be featured in our Varsity Xtra boys basketball preview edition that comes out Friday.
**** Here would be my preseason Fabulous 5 for WPIAL-City League basketball (in alphabetical order):
Shawn Anderson, New Castle, G-F, Sr.
Elijah Cottrill, Beaver Falls, G, Jr.
Ryan Luther, Hampton, F, Jr.
Geno Thorpe, Shaler, G, Sr.
Devin Wilson, Montour, G, Sr.
**** The Clairton football team will be without starting defensive back Titus Howard (dislocated elbow) this week. The Bears might move standout Tyler Boyd from safety to cornerback.
**** Clairton will play Port Allegany in the PIAA semifinals Friday. Here is Port Allegany coach Mike Bodamer, when asked what is the most impressive thing about Clairton: "Definitely their speed. Normally when you play a team, they have maybe three or four kids who are fast that you have to worry about. But they pretty much have 11 kids who just fly to the ball. The other biggest thing I've seen with them, especially on defense, is they are extremely good tacklers."
