Live blog from the North Allegheny-McDowell game in the quarterfinals of the state Class AAAA playoffs. We'll also have score updates and notes from the other three games involving WPIAL teams.
Final score: Aliquippa 51, Karns City 15 - Aliquippa gets 428 yards rushing.
Final score: Clairton 53, Berlin Brothersvalley 0 - Tyler Boyd scores five times and sets WPIAL career touchdown record.
Final score: Cathedral Prep 27, West Allegheny 13
FINAL: NORTH ALLEGHENY 56, MCDOWELL 6
North Allegheny QB Mack Leftwich finished 14 of 15 for 284 yards. Gregg Garrity had seven catches for 128 yards. Thorough domination by NA after McDowell scored first TD of the game.
James Conner finished with 36 yards on nine carries.
Getting tweets that Titus Howard's injury was a dislocated elbow.
Cathedral Prep goes back ahead of West A., 20-13. I take back what I said before. Cathedral Prep is not overrated. And not surprised. Mike Mischler can coach. He had some excellent teams in his first stint at Prep. Obviously, this one is good, too.
8:55 p.m. - North Allegheny scores again. Josh Bergman 6 run.
Kaezon Pugh 64-yard TD run - he's a freshman - and Aliquippa leads Karns City, 51-7. Clairton, Aliquippa, North Allegheny all have forced mercy rule.
West Allegheny has tied up Cathedral Prep, 13-13
Clairton is blowing out Berlin Brothersvalley. But not good news for Clairton. Titus Howard, Pitt recruit, taken off field on stretcher in first half.
END OF THIRD QUARTER: North Allegheny 49, McDowell 6
Terrish Webb TD catch for Clairton and Bears lead Berlin Brothersvalley, 33-0.
8:44 p.m. - Second teamers now in for North Allegheny. McDowell still can't move the ball. Still 49-6 NA leading.
8:30 p.m. - Easy Elijah Zeise intercepts pass, returns for TD, and North Allegheny leads McDowell, 49-6.
Cathedral Prep has taken 13-10 lead on West Allegheny. Cathedral Prep got a blocked punt and then a 1-yard TD run.
8:24 p.m. - And let there be mercy. Second play of third quarter, Mack Leftwich 69-yard TD pass to Brendan Conniker. PAT good and it's 42-6 North Allegheny with 11:06 left in the third quarter. The clock will run continuously now, except change of possessions.
HALFTIME: North Allegheny 34, McDowell 6
FIRST HALF STATS: North Allegheny 241 yards offense to only 87 for McDowell.
Mack Leftwich up to his old tricks. NA QB 12 of 13 for 206 yards. Completed his first seven attempts. Gregg Garrity has 6 catches for 119 yards.
McDowell scored on first possession of game. Had 22 yards rest of the half.
James Conner, Pitt recruit, has only 14 yards on 6 carries. I'm trying to figure out why he doesn't get more carries. But that's the way this McDowell offense is sometimes. I seem to remember saying the same thing last year about standout RB Greg Garmon.
Conner is impressive looking physically, though. Don't judge him on what he does against NA. I remember seeing Shady McCoy get destroyed by a great Central Catholic defense. And look what McCoy did after high school?
Tyler Boyd scores fourth TD. Clairton leads Berlin Brothersvalley, 26-0.
Cathedral Prep gets on board. 5-yard TD pass. PAT no good. Almost half. West Allegheny leading, 10-6.
7:56 p.m. - Have we heard this before? Mack Leftwich TD pass. This one 4 yards to Skylar Cox and it's 35-6 North Allegheny leading McDowell. Leftwich has four TD passes
From Eric Jac: Tyler Boyd scores another TD for Clairton and Bears lead, 20-0. But Eric says Titus Howard is hurt.
Tyler Boyd has scored two touchdowns and Clairton leads Berlin Brothersvalley, 14-0. Boyd has set WPIAL career touchdown record with 111.
Maybe these Erie teams are a little overrated? Were we fooled here in WPIAL? Or are the WPIAL teams just really good this year. West Allegheny has taken a 10-0 lead on Cathedral Prep. And this Cathedral Prep offense hasn't been held below 34 points all year.
Pelcher kicked a 38-yard field goal for West A.
And another big play for Aliquippa. Malik Shegog 60-yard TD run. Quips crushing Karns City 37-0.
7:49 p.m. - NA defense makes a stand on fourth-and-two, stops Pitt recruit James Conner for 1-yard gain. Two plays later, take a wild guess what happened? Yep. Leftwich to Gregg Garrity for a 29-yard TD pass. Kick good. 28-6 NA leading.
McDowell looks overmatched. Of course, NA has done this to most teams.
And it continues, says P-G colleague Brad Everett. Jyler turner 69-yard run for TD and Aliquippa now leads Karns City, 31-0. AND IT'S STILL FIRST QUARTER.
7:34 p.m. - Dang is Mack Leftwich good. So is Gregg Garrity. And so is NA.
McDowell fumbles ball away on kickoff. Sean Idowu forces it, Chas Smith recovers. First play, Leftwich throws a bullet to Garrity, who hauls it in and runs into end zone for 23-yard touchdown play. Kick good by Ziolkowski and it's 21-6 North Allegheny.
7:31 p.m. - Maybe that first score by McDowell woke up North Allegheny. NA moves 72 yards in six plays for a score. Mack Leftwich TD on 1-yard run. Kick good. North Allegheny leading McDowell, 14-6.
Mack Leftwich winging it around again. 6 of 6 for 126 yards already.
Now Dravon Henry with a 63-yard TD run and Aliquippa blowing out Karns City, 24-0.
Mercy rule will be ahead for Aliquippa-Karns City. Terry Swanson scores on 17-yard run and Aliquippa leads Karns City, 17-0.
West Allegheny gets a 12-yard touchdown run from Chayse Dillon. PAT good and West Allegheny leads Cathedral Prep, 7-0. What's up with this vaunted Prep offense?
7:22 p.m. - First play of second quarter, Mack Leftwich hits Skyler Cox with TD pass from 4 yards out on third down. PAT by Ziolkowski good. NA leads, 7-6.
Cathedral Prep and West Allegheny scoreless after first quarter. But West Allegheny is at the Cathedral Prep 13-yard line. PG's Craig Meyer says West A is running at will lately.
7:20 p.m. END OF FIRST QUARTER: McDowell 6, North Allegheny 0
Wow was that a fast first quarter. North Allegheny on verge of answering McDowell score. NA now at 4-yard line. Third-and-goal to start the second quarter.
And Khalil Seaburn sacks QB in end zone for Aliquippa safety. Quips lead Karns City, 10-0.
From Big Brad Everett: Dravon Henry 6-yard TD run and a two-point conversion and Aliquippa leads Karns City, 8-0, in Class AA.
7:12 p.m. - Wow. Impressive. McDowell just pounded it down NA's throat. 14 plays, 65 yards. McDowell converts two third downs and two fourth downs and scores on Khyre Drayer's 3-yard run on fourth-and-one. PAT kick failed. McDowell leads, 6-0. That drive ate up 8 minutes, 1 second. NA yet to get the ball.
7:08 p.m. - Get this. McDowell moving ball with success. Now at NA 12.
7:02 p.m. - McDowell being aggressive. Goes ofr it on fourth and one on first possession and gets it.
Once again, I wonder how much these PIAA playoff games really mean to some teams. It is a half hour from game time and I count exactly 31 people on the McDowell side. I'm sure more are coming, but it's just an example of how these games don't draw much, especially in the quarterfinals. North Allegheny side isn't exactly packed, either.
It's hard to believe North Allegheny will have any WPIAL championship hangover, simply because the Tigers have been down this road before. Third year in a row in PIAA playoffs.
