RMU Issues Statement on Mike Rice

In the week leading up to the Final Four in Atlanta, the collective gaze of the college basketball world Tuesday was centered on Rutgers and former Robert Morris coach Mike Rice.

ESPN showed video footage today on 'Outside the Lines' of Rice pushing, kicking and throwing basketballs at players, even targeting their heads, during the teams practices. Additionally, the tapes showed Rice swearing at players, language that included ethnic and homophobic slurs.

The video and accompanying story can be found here.

Given his connection to Robert Morris, where he coached from 2007-10, athletic director Craig Coleman released a brief statement today regarding Rice and his behavior during his time as the Colonials' coach:

"Coach Rice's tenure at RMU was successful. He is obviously an intense coach, and his passion for the game was mirrored by our student-athletes on the court. The behavior on the video is quite unfortunate, but it is not indicative of Coach Rice during his tenure at RMU."
