86 goes 70.3: Hines Ward is half an Ironman

Written by Dan Gigler on .

hines bike kansasHe's a Super Bowl MVP, a four-time Pro Bowler, three-time team MVP, and holds nearly every receiving record for the Steelers, but what Hines Ward did Sunday was what he called "the hardest thing I've ever done."

Ward yesterday finished a 70.3-mile half Ironman in Lawrence, Kansas, in just under six hours -- 5:53:18 to be exact -- beating his goal of six hours to complete a 1.2-mile open water swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile half marathon.

Earlier this year I interviewed Ward after he'd finished his first event, a mini-triathlon in Coronado, Calif., when he said he'd lost 20-pounds during training, and looks to be even svelter in the pictures here and the video bleow.

The former Steelers captain is training with the GotChocolateMilk team to compete in the Kona Ironman in October.
