Report of new eagle nest inaccurate

Written by John Hayes on .

Wrong bird. Last week's reports of a new Southwest Pennsylvania bald eagle nest were not accurate.

Tom Fazi of the Pennsylvania Game Commission said the agency had been aware of an osprey nest located at the top of an electrical tower in Aliquippa. Sometimes eagles overrun the nests of ospreys, forcing the smaller raptors out. But not in this case, said Fazi.

After talking with the person who reported the siting, and personal observation, the Game Commission confirmed that the birds occupying the electrical tower nest are ospreys.

New local eagle nest?

Written by John Hayes on .

SteveCline

A new bald eagle nest has been seen near Aliquippa, Beaver County, according to Post-Gazette reader Steve Cline. In his cellphone photo above, the nest is at the top left side of an electrical tower near the Ohio River.

Cline said the nest has been observed for months. Today, for the first time, two eagles were seen on the nest.

It would be the fourth active bald eagle nest site known to exist in Southwest Pennsylvania. The others are at Hays (where a live camera covers the birds 24/7), Harmar and Crescent.

The Beaver County site has not been confirmed by the state Game Commission.

Political maneuvering on Pa. endangered species bill

Written by John Hayes on .

The state House did not vote as expected March 10 on a bill that would put more control over the management of endangered and threatened species in the hands of legislators.

Sources in Harrisburg said supporters of the bill believed they didn't have enough votes to pass the Endangered Species Coordination Act.

Speaking from a conference in Denver, John Arway, executive director of the state Fish and Boat Commission, said Fish and Boat, the state Game Commission and groups opposed to House Bill 1576 had offered last-minute gestures designed to "give them some of what they want."

"[Supporters of the bill] want to know the home ranges of endangered species for planning purposes," said Arway. "We're offering them other things that wouldn't impact endangered species and wouldn't impact [Fish and Boat], but would make it easier for businesses to plan around them."

Those options would enable supporters of the bill to tell constituents and allies in industry they "won" on the controversial legislation without jeopardizing endangered and threatened species.

A vote is not expected this week.
