Pitt now has opponents for its first season in the ACC. The league announced Pitt’s schedule pairings, and home/away splits, Friday. Dates and kickoff times are still to be determined, but here are Pitt’s 2013 ACC foes:
Those add to the four non conference games we already knew (vs. Villanova, vs. New Mexico, vs. Notre Dame and at Navy) to make up a pretty impressive 2013 slate. Obviously the visit from Florida State, which finished No. 10 in the 2012 AP Poll, is the highlight of the conference slate. The Seminoles will join the Irish as teams that finished this year in the top 10 (and will almost certainly start next season there) to visit Heinz Field next year. Next season will be the first time Pitt hosts two teams that finished the previous year in the top 10 since 2001, when the Panthers hosted Miami (No. 2) and Virginia Tech (No. 6).
As for the away games, road trips to Atlanta and Blacksburg are absolute slam dunks, and even Duke should be a nice trip with the Blue Devils coming off a bowl appearance. The Panthers have to go back to Syracuse for the second consecutive year, but, as the permanent crossover opponent, that’s something that had to happen to get Florida State on the home schedule. Not a bad tradeoff, I’d say.
I picked Wake Forest as the rotational crossover game a few weeks ago, but that was under the assumption the ACC would have Syracuse visiting Heinz Field this season. It looks like the league decided to throw its new member a bone by moving some things around to give the Panthers a top-flight home game with the Seminoles. In this case, I don’t mind being wrong.
We’ll still have to wait to see when these games will fall on the schedule. The ACC has a Thursday night slot (as well as a Monday night game Labor Day weekend) so I wouldn’t be surprised to have some weeknight football at Heinz Field at least once this season.
