Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-1 win against the Washington Capitals, March 28, 1993.

The Penguins won their 10th consecutive game at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Center Mike Stapleton gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead 8:45 into the game with a goal against goaltender Rick Tabaracci. Assists went to centers Martin Straka and Dave Tippett.

At 9:56 of the second period, left winger Kevin Stevens scored the eventual game-winning goal on a power play. Centers Ron Francis and Mario Lemieux were credited with assists.

Just 45 seconds into the third period, right winger Rick Tocchet scored off assists from Stevens and Lemieux to make it a 3-0 game.

Washington finally got on the scoreboard at the 13:24 mark when right winger Pat Elyniuk scored against goaltender Tom Barrasso. The only assist was credited to center Dale Hunter.

Late in the contest at 18:50, Lemieux scored an empty-net goal off assists from Tocchet and Tippett.
