Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-1 loss against the New Jersey Devils, Feb. 23, 1993.

The Penguins suffered their fourth loss out of five games at the Civic Arena. After a scoreless first period, right winger Randy McKay gave the Devils a 1-0 lead 3:49 into the second period with a score against goaltender Tom Barrasso. The only assist was recorded by left winger Bill Guerin.

Just under 10 minutes later at the 13:30 mark, the Penguins tied the game, 1-1, when right winger Jaromir Jagr scored against goaltender Craig Billington. Rookie center Martin Straka and right winger Rick Tocchet collected assists.

Just 3:45 into the second period, New Jersey left winger Stephane Richer scored the eventual game-winning goal off assists from right winger John MacLean and center Peter Stastny.

Statsny added an insurance goal just over 10 minutes later at the 13:54 mark. Right winger Claude Lemieux and left winger Scott Pellerin were credited with assists.

Notes:
