Penguins

-"By the end of the year I hope to be an established fourth-line guy." - The great Joe Vitale (above) on being a healthy scratch recently.

-A shootout goal by Chris Barton gave the Nailers a 3-2 win against Greenville Road Warriors. Barton had a regulation goal and an assist for the Nailers while teammate Peter Delmas made 35 saves in the victory.

-Happy 32nd birthday to former Penguins forward Jeff Taffe. A free agent signing during the 2007 offseason, Taffe spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. In 2007-08, he appeared in 45 games and scored 12 points. He followed that up in 2008-09 by appearing in eight games and recording two assists. In the 2009 offseason, he joined the Panthers as a free agent. In 53 games with the Penguins, Taffe scored 14 points. He is currently a member of the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

-Happy 30th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney (right).  A first-round pick in 200, Whitney spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins. As a rookie in 2005-06, Whitney played in 68 games and scored 32 points. He followed that up in 2006-07 by setting career-highs in games (81), goals (14), assists (45) and points (59). In that spring's postseason, he appeared in five games and recorded two points. During 2007-08, Whitney played in 76 games and scored 40 points. He saw action in 20 postseason games that spring and scored eight points while helping the team advance to the Stanley Cup Final. After 28 games and 13 points in 2008-09, Whitney was traded to the Ducks in exchange for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi. In 253 regular season games with the Penguins, he scored 150 points, 55th-most in franchise history. In 25 career postseason games, he scored eight points. He is currently a member of the Oilers.

Atlantic Division

-Ilya Bryzgalov made 19 saves for the Flyers in a 7-0 shutout of the Islanders. It was his 30th career shutout. Daniel Briere and Claude Giroux each had two goals and an assist for Philadelphia while teammate Jakub Voracek recorded four assists.

-Islanders defenseman and former Penguin Brian Strait could miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken left ankle.

-Strait was injured after catching his skate in a rut and crashing into the boards:

-Happy times for the Flyers. Not so much for New York's Evgeni Nabokov:

-With Rangers forward Darroll Powe (concussion) being placed on injured reserve, the Rangers recalled forward Brandon Mashinter from Connecticut of the AHL.

-Devils forward Ryan Carter left yesterday's game against the Senators due to an "upper-body" injury after being struck in the head by Senators' defenseman Dave Dziurzynski Dave Dziurzynski.

Northeast Division

-A shootout goal by Jakob Silfverberg gave the Senators a 2-1 win against the Devils. Ben Bishop made 30 saves in the victory.

-Painful times for Ottawa's Chris Neil:

-The Senators scored their first goals since defenseman Erik Karlsson was injured against the Penguins Wednesday.

-Peter Budaj made 19 saves for the Canadiens in a 3-0 shutout of the Hurricanes. It was his 10th career shutout. Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist for Carolina.

-Fluky Goal of the Night: Pacioretty got lucky as Carolina's Cam Ward bobbled this "shot" from center ice:

-Hit of the Night: Montreal's P.K. Subban on Carolina's Patrick Dwyer:

-Not to be outdone, Subban's teammate, Alexei Emelin, dropped Dwyers teammate, Joe Corvo:

-Carolina forward and former Penguin Tim Wallace whiffed on this hit attempt against Subban:

-Ben Scrivens made 37 saves  for the Mape Leafs in a 3-0 shutout of the Panthers. It was his second consecutive shutout as well as the second of his career. Nazem Kadri and Clarke MacArthur each had a goal and an assist for Toronto.

Southeast Division

-“Instead of having three TVs on at once, they can only have two, if Marc is playing. So it’s a little easier on them.” Former Penguins forward Jordan Staal on his parents. Jordan joined his brother, Eric, with the Hurricanes in a trade this past offseason. Their brother Marc is a member of the Rangers.

-The Hurricanes placed defenseman Joni Pitkanen ("lower body") on injured reserve and recalled forwards Jeremy Welsh and Riley Nash from Charlotte of the AHL.

-The Panthers recalled forward Mike Santorelli from San Antonio of the AHL.

Central Division

-Red Wings forward and former Predator Jordin Tootoo (right) returns to Nashville for the first time as a vistor tonight.

-At 12-0-3, the Blackhawks are one game away from matching the 2006-07 Ducks' record for most games without a regulation loss to start a season.

Northwest Division

-Matt Duchene and Aaron Palushaj each had a goal and two assists from the Avalanche in a 6-5 win against Predators. Paul Stastny added a goal and an assist for Colorado while teammates David Jones and P.A. Parenteau each recorded two assists. Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves in the victory. Jonathan Blum, Gabriel Bourque, Mike Fisher, Sergei Kostitsyn, captain Shean Weber and Colin Wilson each recorded a goal and an assist for Nashville.

-Duchene's goal came on a blown offsides call:

-"I didn't hear a whistle. I thought I'd touch it and hear a whistle. From what I heard, it wasn't a great call, but this team has had so many bounces, and to get a good one like that, we're not complaining." - Duchene.

-“The league already verified it should have been an offside. It’s just one of those things. Everybody has a bad day.” - Predators coach Barry Trotz.

-Palushaj got a little lucky as well when Predators goaltender Chris Mason kicked in his goal:

-The Avalanche recalled defenseman Stefan Elliott from Lake Erie of the AHL.

-Wild forward Devin Setoguchi will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL in regards to a double minor he recieved for high sticking Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey Sunday.

-Flames defenseman Mark Giordano will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL in regards to a slew foot against the Stars forward Antoine Roussel Sunday:


-With forward David Booth (groin) ready to come off injured reserve, the Canucks placed forward Andrew Ebbett on waivers.

Pacific Division

-Mike Smith made 30 saves for the Coyotes in a 4-0 shutout of the Flames. It was the 21st shutout of his career. Raffi Torres and Antoine Vermette each had a goal and an assist for Phoenix while teammates Oliver Ekman-Larsson and David Moss each recorded two assists.

-A goal and an assist by captain Ryan Getzlaf led the Ducks to a 3-2 win against the Blue Jackets. Jonas Hiller made 25 saves for Anaheim.

It's something that ended up happening." - Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler on a hit by Kings forward Jarret Stoll which has sidelined him since Feb. 2.

-The Stars recalled defenseman Jordie Benn and forward Matt Fraser from Texas of the AHL and assigned forwards Tomas Vincour and Tom Wandell to Texas.

-The Sharks placed forward James Sheppard ("lower-body") recalled forward Matt Pelech from Worcester of the AHL.

-The NHL will retain the same odds for the upcoming draft lottery.
