Twenty Years Later - Penguins 4, Flames 3 - 01-23-13
"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.
Today, we look at the Penguins' 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames, Jan. 23, 1993.
The Penguins won their third game out of four contests at the Olympic Saddledome in Calgary. The Flames took a 1-0 lead only 1:12 into the game when center Robert Reichel scored against goaltender Ken Wregget. Assists went to right wingers Theo Fleury and Gary Leeman.
Only 31 seconds into the second period, a goal by defenseman Larry Murphy against goaltender Mike Vernon tied the game, 1-1. Right winger Rick Tocchet and defenseman Jim Paek collected assists.
The Penguins took a 2-1 lead at 12:00 when right winger Jaromir Jagr scored his 20th goal of the season off assists from right winger Shawn McEachern and defenseman Paul Stanton.
McEachern scored his 20th goal of the season at the 14:37 mark to make it a 3-1 game. Jagr collected the only assist.
Calgary pulled within a goal 2:46 into the third period when Leeman scored off assists from Fleury and Reichel.
Less than two minutes later at the 4:25 mark, defenseman Kjell Samuelsson scored the eventual game-winning goal. Assists were credited to right winger Mike Needham and left winger Troy Loney.
The final goal of the game was scored by right winger Sergei Makarov off assists from left winger Gary Roberts and defenseman Trent Yawney.
Notes:
-Wregget made 26 saves in the win.
-Wregget stopped center Joe Niewendyk on a penaty shot at 14:50 of the third period.
-The three stars were: 1.) Jagr 2.) Leeman 3.) Tocchet.
