Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

"Twenty Years Later" is a segment with a highly unimaginative name which will appear on Empty Netters throughout the 2012-13 season. We will examine the Penguins' 1992-93 season which led to the only President's Trophy in franchise history. The 1992-93 squad is commonly regarded as the most talented in the history of the Penguins. We will look back on games on the date they happened.

Today, we look at the Penguins' 3-2 win against the Calgary Flames, Jan. 9, 1993.

The Penguins finished a five-game homestand at the Civic Arena. Only 35 seconds into the game, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead when defenseman Larry Murphy scored his 10th goal of the season against goaltender Mike Vernon. Assists went to centers Martin Straka and Dave Tippett.

At 7:04, the lead was increased to 2-0 when former Flames right winger Joe Mullen scored off assists from right winger Shawn McEachern and Murphy.

The Flames got on the scoreboard at 14:41 when center Robert Reichel scored on a power play with a slap shot against goaltender Tom Barrasso. Right winter Theo Fleury and defenseman Gary Suter collected assists.

Following a scoreless second period, a goal by Suter tied the game, 2-2, with a rebound goal at 12:55 of the third period. Center Joe Nieuwendyk and right winger Sergei Makarov were credited with assists.

Late in regulation, at the 15:27 mark, left winger Kevin Stevens scored the game-winning goal with a backhander off assists from right winger Rick Tocchet and center Ron Francis.

Notes:

-Barrasso made 22 saves in the victory.

-The three stars were 1.) Murphy 2.) Barrasso 3.) Suter.
