Penguins

-A new year. The same lockout.

-The NHLPA made a counteroffer to the NHL yesterday. The NHL is reveiwing it.

-NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed the league's drop-dead date to save the season is Jan. 11.

-Brad Thiessen made 32 saves for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 2-1 loss to the Norfolk Admials. The Penguins have lost 10 out of their past 11 games.

-Forward Trevor Smith, who scored the Penguins' only goal, has been the team's only consistent scorer as of late.

-Luke Pither had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers who fell at home to the Elmira Jackals, 3-2.

Happy 55th birthday to former Penguins forward Dave Hunter. Acquired early in the 1987-88 along with Paul Coffey and Wayne Van Dorp in a deal which sent Craig Simpson, Dave Hannan, Moe Mantha and Chris Joseph to the Oilers, Hunter's Penguins' career amounted to 59 games and 29 points that season. Prior to the 1988-89 offseason, he was transfered back to the Oilers as compensation for the Penguins claiming Dave Hannan off waivers.

Southeast Division

-Capitals captain/forward Alex Ovechkin announced his engagement to Russian tennis star Maria Kirilenko via Twitter.

Pacific Division

-Sharks forward Torrey Mitchell has joined the San Francisco Bulls, the Sharks' ECHL affiliate.

-Kings defenseman Alec Martinez (right) has joined the Allen (Texas) Americans of the Central Hockey League.

-"I think I’m at a good place, and I think the extra time to work on things like spin class and Pilates has to help, but you have to get out there and play. You asked me before about the “reversal” and whether or not that caused the neck problems, and I honestly don’t think it has. When I do that move, I’m bracing for the hit or delivering the hit, and I don’t feel pain. It’s when I’m not looking or I’m twisted around, and I don’t expect to get hit…that’s when I feel the pain. So, the big question is when I do get one of those hits, do I just shake it off and it’s no problem or does it really hurt and I have to deal with the problem again?" - Stars captain/forward Brenden Morrow on the lockout allowing him to rest some bumps and bruises.

World Junior Championships

-Penguins defensive prospect Scott Harrington had no shots and was plus-1 for Canada today in a 4-1 defeat of Russia.

Miller, an East Palestine, Ohio native, recorded two assists while Washington, Pa. native Riley Barber, a forward prospect with the Capitals, recorded one shot and was minus-1. Ducks goaltending prospect John Gibson, of Whitehall, made 26 saves in the victory.

-Blues forward prospect Dmitrij Jaskin recorded three assists for the Czech Republic which edged Switzerland, 4-3.

-With the preliminary round concluding yesterday, the tournament moves on to the relegation round beginning Wednesday. Click here for the schedule.

Smythe Division

-Islanders forward John Tavares and Oilers forward Ryan Smyth each scored two goals for Canada which defeated HC Davos, 7-2, to claim the Spengler Cup.

-Smythe celebrating with the Spengler Cup ... which doesn't really have a cup portion:

-Thinking Out Loud: What a fragile looking trophy. A rough sport like hockey deserves and demands nothing but tough trophies. Also, Smyths' nose isn't all that different than that ram mascot's schnoz.

-Dane Fox and Adam Pelech each had a goal and an assist for the Erie Otters in a 7-4 loss to the Niagara IceDogs.

-Mitch Kontny scored two goals for the Johnstown Tomahawks in a 3-2 loss to the Kalamazoo Wings.

-Finally, Happy New Year:
