Duquesne has landed 6-foot-8 power forward Isaiah Watkins from Toronto, Ont. He is considered consensus 3-star player and is currently enrolled at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J.
Watkins, reached at his home, said he chose Duquesne over many other offers because he believed he could trust the coaching staff and liked the concept of how the Dukes will play under first year coach Jim Ferry.
“I know they’re in the rebuilding stage, but I like the team concept and the way they use their forwards,” said Watkins. “I really love the versatility of all the forwards. They can bring up the ball, shoot from the 3 and take you off the dribble. Those are all things I like to do.”
Watkins said the decision making process was stressful, but after he came to Duquesne earlier this month and met with the team it helped his decision.
Watkins knows point guard Marvin Binney, one of Ferry’s first recruits, who is also from Toronto.
"You definitely want to go where your heart is most comfortable and that was Duquesne for me,” he said. “(Binney) told me it was a great fit for him. He was very honest with me, and told me how he felt they would use me. He really felt he could trust them and told me you get a lot of love because it’s the main sport at the school. I felt like all those things were important.”
