Pitt (3-2, 0-1 ACC) returns to conference action this week after putting the finishing touches on prep for Georgia Tech (3-2, 1-2), which coach Pat Narduzzisaid went well. He basically explained that a year ago the team was spent so much time installing the base defense that they didn’t get to triple-option prep until the Yellow Jackets game was upon them. This time around they’ve been practicing since August, devoting time during two-a-days and feel better prepared.
Game: Pitt vs. Georgia Tech
When: Saturday, Oct. 8 12:30 p.m.
Where: Heinz Field
*Narduzzi said he expects WR Dontez Fordto “return soon” but did not elaborate any further.
*Narduzzi said he was “shocked” and happy the ACC won’t add a ninth conference game to the schedule in 2016. The league’s athletic directors voted for the status quo on Wednesday, and will continue to play just eight conference games in addition to one non-conference game against a Power 5 team.
“Shocked,” said Narduzzi. “I thought it was going to go the nine [game] way...I think it’s great. I think it gives opportunities for other people to play against. Go out to the Pac-12, Big Ten, whoever. It gives you an opportunity to get outside the conference. I’m happy with it. It’s what we’ve been doing and doesn’t change much of the structure.”
*Therran Coleman, a freshman defensive back who played QB on the scout team this week trying to help prepare for the triple-option: “He’s my player of the week as far as the offense goes. He did a nice job. Really did a nice job. …He didn’t get a lot of work on defense this week because of it. [But it’s] probably the most important role we had this week.…The quarterback is the hard one to play.”
