About Reg on Wry

Written by Matt Kennedy on .

Reg on Wry is a chance for me to comment in my usual twisted way on the passing parade of events as they occur. I also write a weekly column that appears Wednesdays in the Page Two Portfolio section. The Scripps Howard News Service distributes the column to newspapers across the country, which brings me a harvest of mostly uncomprehending emails from Alaska to Alabama.

The other hat I wear is that of deputy editorial page editor. In that capacity, I write some of the anoymous editorials that run in the newspaper and on the Web site every day. Unlike my column and this blog, those represent the opinion of the Post-Gazette editorial board.

I joined the Post-Gazette in 1978 and was one of the earliest writers of the Saturday Diary. I left in 1988 to become the editor of The Monterey County (Calif.) Herald, which was then owned by the Post-Gazette's parent company. A year after The Herald was sold to Scripps Howard, I returned to Pittsburgh, in 1994.

Journalism is very much in my blood. My father managed the Reuters news agency in Singapore, where I was born in 1948, I moved to Australia as a small boy and grew up in Brisbane. I began my newspaper career at the Brisbane Courier-Mail but was drafted into the Australian Army and served in Vietnam. I moved to Britain in 1973, where I had also lived briefly as a child, and eventually joined The Times of London on the sports desk.

I live in Sewickley with my wife. We have two grown children. In my off hours, depending on the season, I play tennis, paddle tennis, bowl duck-pins and play cricket -- and some say I am eccentric!
