My AP Poll ballot: Week 5

Written by Sam Werner on .

Each week, I'll go through my AP Top 25 ballot and give a few thoughts on how I voted and how it compares to the overall poll results.

Apologies for the slight delay, as I had to travel back to Pittsburgh today, but without further ado, here's my AP ballot for this week's Top 25 poll. There really weren't any big games this week, and most ranked teams just played easy bodybag games. So not a whole lot of movement in my ballot...

  1. Alabama
  2. Oregon
  3. Clemson
  4. Ohio State
  5. Stanford
  6. Florida State
  7. LSU
  8. Louisville
  9. Texas A&M
  10. Georgia
  11. Oklahoma State
  12. South Carolina
  13. UCLA
  14. Washington
  15. Oklahoma
  16. Michigan
  17. Miami (Fla.)
  18. Florida
  19. Northwestern
  20. Mississippi
  21. Baylor
  22. Notre Dame
  23. Texas Tech
  24. Wisconsin
  25. Fresno State

- Like I said, not a whole lot of interest this week. My top 10 stays exactly the same, since all of them were either off or played vastly inferior opponents and won with ridiculous score lines. We'll definitely see some movement next week as Georgia and LSU face off and Ohio State has its first real test of the season against Wisconsin.

- The only big mover in my poll this week was Michigan, which I dropped five spots to No. 16. I was willing to overlook the near-loss to Akron as an anomaly, with the Wolverines just experiencing a severe hangover from their emotional win over Notre Dame the week before. But after also almost losing to a dreadful Connecticut team, I no longer see Michigan as a top-15 team. For as great as Devin Gardner and company looked against the Irish, they've made too many major mistakes against bad teams. They were good enough to overcome them against bad teams, but make those mistakes against even a decent Big Ten team and they'll end up paying for it.

- I flip-flopped Washington and Oklahoma, mostly because I'm not sold the Sooners have figured out their offense. They looked great with Blake Bell a week ago, but it's going to take a strong performance in South Bend against Notre Dame Saturday to convince me that they're truly legit.

- Texas Tech jumps into the poll this week. The Red Raiders were one of my first teams outside the top 25 last week after a nice win against TCU and a couple of teams dropping out let them slide in.

- I had a tough time deciding between keeping Wisconsin and Arizona State in the top 25. I came close to leaving the Sun Devils in that No. 24 spot, but, even though Arizona State beat the Badgers with that controversial ending last week, I came away from that game still thinking that Wisconsin had better long-term prospects for the season. Both those teams look like fringe top 25 squads at this point.

- Fresno State joins the poll. I think the Bulldogs are legit, but the problem is they won't have many chances the rest of the way to earn a big win. That said, if they want to be a BCS buster, staying undefeated is enough, and they did that this week against Boise State. I came very, very close to putting Georgia Tech here too. The Yellow Jackets are pretty good, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pop into the top 25 with what I expect will be a pretty easy and comfortable win over Virginia Tech Thursday night
