In last year, Pitt has faced more roster turmoil than sanctioned Penn State

Written by Mark Dent on .

Penn State beat writer Mark Dent compared roster moves for Pitt and Penn State over the past year:

Pitt and Penn State, our two biggest area college football teams, began last season with a new coach under extreme circumstances. At Pitt, Todd Graham left after one season and was replaced by Paul Chryst. And since 2010, Pitt has had four coaches: Dave Wannstedt, Mike Haywood, Graham and Chryst. No question, that kind of scenario is bound to cause excessive roster changes. Probably the only school you’d expect to face more changes is Penn State.

New coach Bill O’Brien was greeted last July with some of the most severe sanctions in NCAA history. The most difficult one, he said, was the NCAA’s decision to give his players the ability to transfer and earn immediate eligibility for a year. Many people expected a mass exodus.

But as the transfer period draws to an end – August 5 – Penn State has actually had less of a roster shakeup than its neighbor to the west. Using the introduction of the Penn State sanctions as a starting point, late July 2012, I compared each team’s roster from then until now. Nineteen players have quit, transferred from or been kicked off the team at Pitt since then. At Penn State, 17 players have transferred or quit.*

*Walk-ons who left the team were not included for Pitt or Penn State because, wow, that would be too tough to track.

Pittsburgh

-Brendan Carrozzini – left team

-Lloyd Carrington – transfer

-Drew Carswell – dismissed from team

-Chris Davis – transfer

-Corey Davis – left team

-Demetrious Davis – transfer

-Arthur Doakes – transfer

-Jason Frimpong – transfer

-Terrell Jackson – transfer

-Dan Mason – dismissed from team

-Mark Myers – transfer

-Tom Ricketts – quit team, still in school

-Deaysean Rippy – transfer

-Roderick Ryles – transfer

-Brandon Sacco – no longer on the roster

-Rushel Shell – transfer

-Eric Williams – dismissed from team

-Salath Williams – transfer

-Steve Williams – dismissed from team

Penn State

-Steven Bench - transfer

-Rob Bolden – transfer

-Justin Brown – transfer

-Tim Buckley – transfer

-Curtis Dukes – left team

-Anthony Fera – transfer

-Khairi Fortt – transfer

-Luke Graham – quit team, stayed in school

-Kevin Haplea – transfer

-Paul Jones – transfer

-Shawney Kersey – left team

-Ryan Nowicki – transfer

-Jamil Pollard - transfer

-Silas Redd – transfer

-Dakota Royer – quit team, stayed in school

-Anthony Stanko – quit team, stayed in school

Penn State mostly performed at the same level without the players who left. Though the transfer of kicker Anthony Fera probably cost Penn State the Virginia game, the other talented players to leave, such as Silas Redd and Justin Brown, were seamlessly replaced by Zach Zwinak and Allen Robinson.

Unlike Penn State, it remains to be seen how Pitt will react to these departures. Running back Rushel Shell, defensive back Eric Williams and tight end Drew Carswell are probably the team’s biggest losses, and they all transferred or were kicked off the team in this offseason.
