-The Penguins had a coach. Then they didn't. Then they did (sort of) and now.... they don't have a coach. Or something.

-Former Penguins forward Toby Petersen announced his retirement. He spent last season with the Texas Stars, Dallas' AHL affiliate. A ninth-round pick of the Penguins in 1998, Petersen (right, with a slightly taller teammate) spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins in the early 2000s. In 91 games with the Penguins, Petersen scored 26 points. Petersen, 35, spent parts of 10 season in the NHL with the Penguins, Oilers and Stars. In 398 career games, he had 81 points.

Neapolitan Ice Cream Metropolitan Division

-The Rangers placed forward Brad Richards on waivers with the intention of using a compliance buyout on his contract.

-“This is a passionate individual. He wants to win. He wants to turn this thing and he wants to be successful. For me, we need to kind of tweak our culture here and get it back to where we had it when things were running smooth and successful. I think he’s the guy to help do that. He’s going to hold guys accountable. He’s going to demand that they come and compete every night. I think our fans deserve to see that every night, a team that’s working hard.” - Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis on new head coach Bill Peters.

-The Hurricanes hired Ricky Olczyk as an assistant general manager. The brother of former Penguins coach/forward Ed Olczyk, Ricky Olczyk previous served as an assistant general manager of the Oilers.


-The Capitals will face the Blackhawks in next season's Winter Classic in Washington. The site of the game has yet to be announced.


-The Devils re-signed forward/enforcer Cam Janssen to a one-year two-way contract.

-The Blue Jackets have granted the Oilers permission to negotiate a contract with restricted free agent defenseman Nikita Nikitin (right). If an agreemnt is reached, the Blue Jackets will trade Nikitin to the Oilers.

Atlantic Division

-The Maple Leafs re-signed restricted free agent forward Brandon Kozun to a one-year two-way contract.

Central Division

-The Avalanche extended a qualifying offer to restricted free agent forward Joey Hishon.

Pacific Division

-The Kings will not use a compliance buyout on the contract of forward Mike Richards.
