Following the Penguins' 2-1 road win against the Flames Saturday, Root Sports' Dan Potash conducted an interview with Penguins' left winger Tanner Glass near the visiting team's dressing room in the Scotiabank Saddledome.
In the background over Glass' left shoulder was a doorway to the visiting team's change room where players usually dress after showering. Defenseman Kris Letang opened the door and inadvertently gave Root Sports viewers a glimpse of Penguins center Brandon Sutter which left little to the imagination.
Despite the use of cutaway shots to limit the sight of a naked Sutter, there was enough video to create a frenzy on Twitter and other social media during the early hours of Sunday morning.
(We won't link to the video or any images. Feel free to find them on your own.)
Earlier today, Sutter talked about his accidental appearance on the postgame show:
When did you find out what happened?
"Just after the game. Our [director of communications Jen Bullano] and [manager of team services] Jimmy Britt just kind of pulled me aside and said this is what happened. I didn’t know what to think at first but I don’t think it was as bad I would have originally expected. It was in the distance a bit. There’s not much what you can say about it. It was a freak accident. It is what it is."
Were you unaware cameras were outside the door?
"We knew there were cameras out there. I think we were standing there watching [goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury] do the 'Hockey Night in Canada' interview and we were just sitting there watching TV. I’m pretty sure I was standing right in front of the shower. I’m not sure how it got in there. Like I said, it’s one of those freak accidents. I think in time, it will just kind of cool off a bit. At first, I didn’t know what to think but I think down the road, I’ll probably find it kind of funny."
Have you seen it online?
"Yeah. I don’t have Twitter so I haven’t seen much. Some of the guys have shown me. It is what it is. Not much I can do about it."
Did any friends and family contact you when it happened?
"My brother and sister thought it was pretty funny. Some people were more concerned. Some people thought it was funny. A lot of different reactions I guess. I think it’s something in the future, there will be a lot of jokes about. I’ll just try to run with it."
You're not upset?
"It’s a freak accident. No one could have done much about it. We’ll just try to prevent it from happening in the future."
UPDATE: Via E-mail, Root Sports senior vice president and general manager Shawn McClintock issued a statement regarding the broadcast:
"Obviously we regret the error, and we have reviewed our procedures with everyone involved to prevent it from happening again. We were doing the interview in a hallway outside the locker room, and the door opened unexpectedly -- but we accept full responsibility, and we apologize to Brandon, our viewers and the Penguins."
