-Penguins forward prospect Oscar Sundqvist was selected for Sweden's roster for the IIHF World Championships. Erie Otters goaltender Oscar Dansk, a Blue Jackets prospect, was also selected.

-Happy 27th birthday to current Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen. Acquired prior to the 2011 trade deadling along with James Neal in a deal which sent Alex Goligoski to the Stars, Niskanen has spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins. He finished 2010-11 by appearing in 18 games and scoring four points. In seven postseason games, he contributed one assist. During 2011-12, Niskanen played in 75 games and scored 21 points. He played in four postseason games that spring and contributed three points. Niskanen played in 40 games last season and contributed 14 points. Last postseason, Niskanen appeared in 15 playoff games and recorded two assists. This season, he has played in 30 games and collected 11 points. In 163 regular season career games with the Penguins, Niskanen has scored 50 points. In 26 postseason games, he has scored six points.

-Today would have been the 81st birthday of former Penguins and Hornets goaltender Hank Bassen. Acquired from the Red Wings in exchange for Roy Edwards in the 1967 offseason, Bassen was literally the first goaltender in franchise history. He made 35 saves for the Penguins in the franchise's first game, a 2-1 loss to the Canadiens, Oct. 11, 1967. Bassen appeared in 25 games and went 7-10-3 that season with a 2.86 goals against average and one shutout. He retired following that season. Bassen passed away at the age of May 29, 2009 at the age of 76.

- A hat trick and an assist by Taylor Hall led the Oilers past the Avalanche, 8-2. Mark Arcobello, Jordan Eberle, Ales Hemsky and David Perron each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton while teammate Ryan Smyth recorded three assists. Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves in the victory.

-A hat trick and an assist by Dane Fox led the Erie Otters to a 6-1 rout of the Peterborough Petes.
