Schedule released; Penguins in Metropolitan Division - 07-19-13

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

The Penguins' 2013-14 schedule has been released. Additionally, with realignment, the Penguins are now in a new division called the Metropolitan Division with the Blue Jackets, Capitals, Devils, Flyers, Hurricanes, Islanders and Rangers.

The other divisions are:

Atlantic - Bruins, Sabres, Red Wings, Panthers, Canadiens, Senators, Lightning and Maple Leafs.
Central - Blackhawks, Blues, Predators, Wild, Avalanche, Stars and Jets
Pacific - Kings, Ducks, Coyotes, Sharks, Canucks, Flames and Oilers.

EN Says: There is a division in a professional sports league called "Metropolitan."

Let that sink in for a moment.

Really? The NHL took two years to come up with a realignment plan and this is the best name they could come up with? Would "The Only Teams NBC Will Broadcast Division" not fit on a championship banner?

On top of everything else, the league's playoff structure will be unbalanced with 16 teams in the two eastern divisions and only 14 in the western division while a new confusing playoff structure with wild card teams will be ushered in. Additionally, they took the name of the old Atlantic Division and gave it to what was essentially the old Northeast Division.

Got it?

As for the schedule, it can be viewed down below. A few highlights:

  • The Penguins open the season Oct. 3 against the Devils. They will start the season with a three-game home stand.
  • Their first road trip is Oct. 11 and 12 with a swing through Florida against the Panthers and Lightning respectively.
  • Their first game against the rival Flyers is in Philadelphia, Oct. 17. That is also their first nationally broadcast game.
  • The Penguins will host the Avalanche and Nathan MacKinnon, the first overall pick in this year's NHL draft, Oct. 21. MacKinnon, like Sidney Crosby, is a native of Cole Harbour, N.S.
  • The Penguins will face former teammate Jarome Iginla (right) and the Boston Bruins Oct. 30, at Consol Energy Center.
  • The Blue Jackets will move from the Central Division to the Metropolitan Division. As a result, they will host the Penguins three times at Nationwide Arena, Nov. 2, Dec. 29, March 28. By car, Columbus is approximately three hours west of Pittsburgh.
  • The Penguins' first game against the rival Capitals is Nov. 20 at the Verizon Center.
  • Former Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy and the Sharks will visit Consol Energy Center Dec. 5.
  • Former Penguins forward Matt Cooke and the Wild will visit Consol Energy Center Dec. 19.
  • The Penguins will play on New Year's Eve at New Jersey, 1 p.m.
  • A swing through Western Canada will take place Jan. 7, 10 and 11 with trips to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary respectively.
  • The Penguins' final game prior to the Olympic break will be on the road against the Rangers, Feb. 7. Their first game after the break will be a home contest against the Canadiens, Feb. 27.
  • On March 1, the Penguins will face the Blackhawks outdoors at Chicago's Soldier Field. The game is not scheduled at this time to be broadcast nationally. NBC Sports Network will carry the game.
  • They will finish the regular season April 13 at home against the Senators.
