Parity rules in NHL - 06-21-13

Written by Seth Rorabaugh on .

For two leagues with very similar structures when it comes to schedules, standings and postseasons, the NBA and NHL are on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to competitive balance.

Since the turn of this century, the NHL (30 total teams) and the NFL (32 teams) are the only leagues out of the four major North American sports leagues to have over half of their teams make at least one appearance in a championship series/game. In contrast, the NBA, with 30 teams as well, is the only league of the four which has seen fewer than half of its teams reach a championship final in that time span.

Major League Baseball (30 teams) has had 50 percent of its teams appear in World Series since 2000.
