One of the worst-kept secrets was revealed today when the NHL officially announced the Penguins would face the Blackhawks in Chicago's Soldier Field next season. The game is scheduled for March. 1
This will be the third outdoor game the Penguins will have participated in. In 2008, they faed the Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. and hosted the Capitals at Heinz Field in 2011.
The Blackhawks will participate in their second outdoor game having previously hosted the Red Wings in 2009.
EN Says: Overkill.
With the usual Winter Classic being held New Year's Day between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich, the NHL is oversaturating a product which saw it's novelty wear off a long time ago.
That said, the event will sell-out for grossly over-priced tickets and a tire or phone company will pay big bucks to sponsor it. That's the only justification the NHL needs to scheduling multiple outdoor games.
