Weekend traffic, transit obstacles you'll want to avoid

With a busy weekend that includes the Three Rivers Arts Festival and Pirates home games (including an unusual 4:05 p.m. start time for Saturday’s game), there are a few obstacles that drivers might want to be aware of.

menatworkThe ramp from inbound Boulevard of the Allies to northbound Interstate 579-Crosstown Boulevard will be closed for the weekend starting at 10 p.m. today. Traffic to Downtown Pittsburgh will be detoured to the Grant Street exit of the Parkway East, while drivers bound for the Parkway North will be sent via the Parkway East to the Fort Duquesne Bridge. The ramp will reopen by 6 a.m. Monday. The ramp from the Boulevard of the Allies to the Liberty Bridge will remain open.

A lane will be closed on the southbound Crosstown Boulevard from the Seventh Avenue on-ramp to the off-ramp for Allies and the Parkway East from 6 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Milling and paving will cause traffic restrictions on Route 60-Steubenville Pike in Robinson starting tonight. Alternating one-way traffic will be in effect from Old Steubenville Pike to Hightower Boulevard from 10 tonight to 1 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday. Flaggers will control traffic.

Inspection of overhead signs will cause lane closures from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday on Beechwood Boulevard at the ramps to the outbound Parkway East and on the Parkway West ramps to Interstate 79.

An outbound lane of the Parkway West in Findlay will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday between the Pittsburgh International Airport and Flaugherty Run Road interchanges.

Line painting on Interstate 79 will occur from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday between Neville Island and Route 910. Work will begin on I-79 at Route 910 and proceed in the southbound direction. Stay well back and remember the paint crews will pull over periodically to let traffic pass.

portauthoritylogoPart of the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway will be closed this weekend for demolition of the closed pedestrian bridge and stairway at Negley Station. The closure had been planned for last weekend but was postponed. It will cause detours on the P1 East Busway-All Stops and P3 East Busway-Oakland bus routes. The busway will be closed between East Liberty bus garage and the Neville Street ramp from 8 p.m. today until the end of service Sunday. The P1 and P3 will not serve Negley or East Liberty stations during the closure but will instead serve nearby temporary stops.

Moving into next week, it’s the return of Splitsville on inbound Route 28. Traffic will encounter a new pattern that splits the two lanes near the 31st Street Bridge starting Wednesday. The left lane will take traffic to the North Shore and ramps to Interstate 579-Crosstown Boulevard and the Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt bridges. All traffic in the right lane must exit at East Ohio Street. To make the change, inbound Route 28 will be reduced to a single lane from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, when the new pattern is scheduled to take effect. A previous split of the inbound lanes during ongoing construction caused major backups, and PennDOT said this change also may lead to congestion as motorists hesitate about which lane to use.

Single-lane closures will occur as needed on northbound Route 51 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 13 between Fairhaven Road and Underwood Street in Overbrook.

Crack and joint sealing on McKnight Road will start Monday, with short-term, slow-moving lane closures overnight in both directions between Evergreen Road in Pittsburgh’s Summer Hill neighborhood and Pine Creek Road in McCandless starting at 7 p.m. daily through Friday. Restrictions lift by 6 a.m.

Routine maintenance will close a lane in both directions of the Fort Pitt Tunnels overnight starting at 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. All clear by 5 a.m. daily.

Lane closures for overhead sign inspections are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday on westbound Route 22 between Old William Penn Highway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Monroeville; southbound Route 8-Ardmore Boulevard between Brinton Road and the Parkway East on-ramp in Wilkinsburg; and southbound Route 148-Fifth Avenue between the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge and Lysle Boulevard in McKeesport.

Landslide repairs will close Blythedale Road to through traffic between Fallen Timber and Douglas Run roads in Elizabeth Township starting at 8 a.m. Monday and continuing around the clock through mid-August.
