Jammin' summer ahead on I-79 in Butler County

Written by Jon Schmitz on .

Traveling on Interstate 79 promises to be an adventure for much of the spring-summer season, thanks to the trucker who smashed into bridges in Lancaster Township, Butler County, just north of Zelienople.

The left northbound lane and right southbound lane will stay closed during emergency repairs that are expected to continue into August, PennDOT spokeswoman Deborah Casadei said. The closure has caused frequent backups. For those who hate to sit in traffic, there’s a relatively painless go-around. Going northbound, exit at Little Creek Road and take it west to Route 19, then head north to Portersville and a quick return to I-79. The southbound detour uses the same route in reverse.

There’s another lane closure, in both directions, at the bridges over Route 422 at Exit 99, and that, too has caused some big backups. Northbound should be OK most of the time, as the lane closure north of Zelie is choking off traffic; southbound, an escape can be made at Grove City, using Route 208 west to Route 19 south for a return past the work zone on Route 422. The detour adds about 10 minutes to travel time.

roadconstructionInspection of the Portal Bridge through Point State Park will cause lane closures on the inbound lower deck of the Fort Duquesne Bridge this weekend. The right lane will close from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday; the left lane and the ramp to the 10th Street Bypass will close from 6 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

Reminder: A prolonged around-the-clock closure of northbound Lebanon Road-Route 885 in West Mifflin begins early Monday for replacement of the bridge over the Union Railroad tracks. The road will be blocked at Lebanon Church Road and traffic detoured via Buttermilk Hollow and Mifflin roads.
