Squirrel Hill Tunnels to be open this weekend, but ...

Written by Jon Schmitz on .

squirrelhilltunnelFrom various accounts, the outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closure made for quite a mess over the weekend, on the Parkway East, on the posted detour and on neighboring streets. For much of Sunday, it was taking drivers an hour or more to get through the detour.

The good news: There will be no tunnel closure in either direction this coming weekend.

Both tunnels will continue to have single-lane traffic overnight; inbound starting at 9 p.m. daily, outbound at 10 p.m. Restrictions end by 5 a.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. weekends. There are no restrictions on Sunday nights.

There will be plenty of other stuff to avoid: Outbound West Carson Street closes on Friday night for more than two years of construction, and the outbound Liberty Tunnel remains closed until Aug. 12, with overnight closures of the inbound tunnel starting at 10 p.m. daily except Saturdays.

Port Authority buses that use West Carson are going to be detoured, including four routes that will no longer serve Downtown. Find the details here.
