What color for the new Greenfield Bridge?

The Post-Gazette has changed its blogging platform to allow Facebook commenting on blog posts, just like on news stories. Let’s hear from you: transportation tips, gripes and questions. I’ll do my best to answer as time permits.

During his presentation Wednesday on plans to replace the Greenfield Bridge — which by the way is officially named the Beechwood Boulevard Bridge — assistant city public works director Pat Hassett told a public gathering that the community would get to help pick the color of the new span.

He told those in attendance if they regarded the new bridge over the Parkway East as just a piece of infrastructure, it should probably be gray or brown; if they wanted it to have context with the surrounding environment, it could be green to match the forested slopes or blue to match the sky. Or, he said, “if you want it to make a statement,” what else but black and gold?

I know what I’m betting on.

Port Authority will operate regular weekday service on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but the Downtown Service Center will be closed. Should be plenty of empty seats on buses and rail cars.

Repair of holes in the deck of the bridge that carries Route 885 over the ramp that connects westbound Route 837 (Riverton Street) to East Carson Street in Hays will cause lane closures from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday, while the ramp below the bridge will be closed. Traffic will be detoured southbound on Route 885 to Glass Run Road, turning around to take northbound Route 885 across the Glenwood Bridge to Second Avenue to the Hot Metal Bridge to reach East Carson.

Inspections of overhead signs will cause some lane closures on the Parkway East and Parkway West this weekend. From 6 a.m. to noon Saturday, anticipate lane closures on the inbound Parkway East between Grant Street and the Fort Pitt Bridge and outbound at the Monroeville/Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange; during the same time on Sunday, the work will occur on the Parkway West in both directions between Interstate 79 and Carnegie.

Inspectors also will be at work at the Parkway West bridge over Campbells Run Road just east of the I-79 interchange in Robinson from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Lane closures are possible in both directions during those times.

A portion of Westinghouse Avenue in North Versailles will close long-term starting Monday for repair of a landslide that occurred more than a year ago, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.
The section between Mahoning Street/East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard and Route 148 will close at 7 a.m. and stay closed around the clock through mid-May. Traffic will detour via Route 30 and Route 686. Nearly 14,000 vehicles use the road on a typical day.

Freeport Road will be closed in both directions from midnight on Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday and again from midnight Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday from Ninth Street and the C.L. Schmitt Bridge in East Deer to Conroy Way in Tarentum for movement of mill stands by Fagioli Inc. Northbound traffic will be detoured using Riddle Run Road to Butler Logan Road to Route 28 to Route 366. The southbound detour goes in the opposite direction.
