Mount Washington Transit Tunnel closed for weekend

Written by Jon Schmitz on .

The Port Authority will close the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel to buses and rail vehicles all day Saturday and Sunday during work on the ventilation system.

Red Line and Blue Line service will detour via the former Allentown route and won't serve Station Square. Subway Local service will operate between Downtown and Station Square on Saturday. Riders wishing to reach Station Square on Sunday will need to transfer to buses at South Hills Junction or in Downtown.

Seven bus routes also will be detoured for the weekend, using Arlington and Warrington avenues to bypass the tunnel closure. Regular routing is expected to resume for the start of service on Monday.

Alternating one-way traffic is occurring on the Mansfield Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River between Dravosburg and McKeesport, until 3 p.m. today for pavement patching.

The ramps from southbound Route 28 to the Veterans Bridge and from the bridge to northbound Route 28 will be closed this weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced. Crews will install signs and pavement markings during the closure from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. The work was scheduled for last weekend but postponed by rain. PennDOT is recommending that drivers consider alternate routes.

The detour for southbound Route 28 is to exit onto East Ohio Street, right onto Madison Avenue, continuing onto East Street and crossing the Parkway North to the Venture Street on-ramp to the inbound parkway toward the Veterans Bridge. It’s a bit of a haul. Bridge traffic will be detoured by continuing outbound on the Parkway North to Hazlett Street; right on East Street; and left on East Ohio Street to the ramp to Route 28.

Traffic will be stopped briefly in both directions on the Parkway East in Wilkins and Monroeville on Sunday morning while Comcast strings new lines over the highway. The first stoppage of about 10 minutes will be at 9 a.m. at the Rodi Road exit; the second will be at 11 a.m. west of the Monroeville-Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange.

Lane closures are possible from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday during inspections of overhead signs in the following places: Route 19 (both directions) at the I-79 interchange in Marshall; I-79 (both directions) at the Glenfield/Route 65 interchange; inbound Parkway North at the off-ramp to Camp Horne Road (shoulder closure only).

Lane closures are possible from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday on the inbound Parkway West between Carnegie and Parkway Center and during the same hours on Sunday outbound in the same area during overhead sign inspections.

Center lane closures will occur on the outbound lower deck of the Fort Pitt Bridge from 10 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday near the off-ramp to West Carson Street for crash barrier repairs.

The overnight inbound lane closure in the Fort Pitt Tunnels has been rescheduled from tonight to 10 p.m. Thursday. The lane will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday.
