Light Up Night may be Write Up Night for parking enforcers

UPDATED at 11 a.m. with Port Authority info. See below.

Pittsburgh police are recommending extra care if you intend to drive in for Light Up Night festivities Friday or the parade on Saturday.

Because many parking meters have been removed and replaced with kiosks, the temporary “no parking” signs might not be as in-your-face as when they were attached to each meter. Police recommend you park in a lot or garage to be on the safe side. Also, they are warning visitors not to leave any valuables within sight in vehicles. Lock those iPods, iPads, GPS devices and anything else you don’t want stolen in the trunk.

The event will cause myriad street closures and transit detours but public transit is your best bet for getting to and from Downtown Pittsburgh. Here are the closures:

Unveiling of Macy’s Window

Smithfield Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues will close to traffic at 4:30 p.m. except for buses, which will operate there until 6 p.m. After that, buses will detour. The unveiling is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Street scheduled to reopen at 8:30 p.m.

Santa Spectacular in Point State Park

Commonwealth Place will be closed from Liberty Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Highmark Unity Tree Lighting (the old Horne’s)

Liberty Avenue will close from Fifth Avenue to the turnaround in Gateway Center  from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Stanwix Street also will close between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Third Avenue.

Other Light Up Night closures

Fourth Avenue between Wood and Stanwix streets from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Forbes Avenue at Wood Street and all of Market Square from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Roberto Clemente Bridge from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Andy Warhol Bridge from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Rachel Carson Bridge from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. for fireworks show

Sounds of the Season Parade, 5 p.m. Saturday

Market Square including Forbes Avenue at Wood Street closed from noon to 9 p.m.

Parade route closures — 11th Street from Smallman to Grant streets; Liberty Avenue from Grant to Commonwealth Place; Penn and Liberty avenues west of Stanwix Street; Stanwix from Fort Duquesne Boulevard to Liberty.

No parking after 9 a.m. — Forbes Avenue between Wood and Stanwix, McMasters Way, Market Street, Graeme Place, Market Square.

No parking after 4 p.m. — 11th Street between Smallman and Grant; Liberty Avenue between Grant Street and Commonwealth Place; Penn Avenue from Stanwix to Liberty; Stanwix between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Liberty; Fort Duquesne Boulevard between Stanwix and Sixth Street.

PennDOT has canceled the scheduled closure of the inbound Parkway East “bathtub” section for Friday night.

Many Port Authority bus routes will operate on special detours Friday and Saturday. Most Light Up Night detours will go into effect at approximately 6 p.m. Friday, with detours on a few routes beginning earlier. Approximately 50 bus routes will be detoured Friday, with detours lasting through the end of the night. Additionally, about 40 routes will be detoured Saturday between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the parade. Riders should allow for extra time when traveling. Port Authority plans to provide additional capacity – such as two-car trains, Subway Local service and articulated buses on key routes – to accommodate Light Up Night crowds.

Starting immediately, the first hour of parking is free in the extended term lot at Pittsburgh International Airport. This is the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s way to provide a “cell phone lot” for those awaiting arriving passengers. Parking will not be free in the short- or long-term lots. The first hour there costs $1; after that, the regular rates kick in. The second hour of parking in the extended term lot will cost $1; the $8 per day rate kicks in after that.

Westinghouse Bridge inspection work will cause lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Wednesday.

Inspection of bridges on inbound Route 28 at Etna will cause lane closures until 2:30 p.m. today (Thursday).

The Glass Run Road bridge over Glass Run between Gensler and Cathell roads will have lane closures at times from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Monday for guide rail repairs.

Be sure to check back later for other weekend traffic advisories via PennDOT. I’ll add those to the top of the post as they come in.
