Before we jump into today’s goodies, we want to recommend that you check the previous post for some important road work advisories for the weekend, including Route 28, the Portal Bridge, McKees Rocks Bridge, Fort Pitt Tunnels and Route 65, to name a few. More are at the end of this post.
It’s been an open secret that Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Blair, would vie for the chairmanship of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. On Thursday, he made it official in a letter to his GOP colleagues.
Mr. Shuster’s father, E.G. “Bud” Shuster, was legendary for bringing home the bacon during his reign as T&I chair from 1995 to 2001, including Interstate 99 in Pennsylvania, which bears his name. The younger Shuster might be constrained a bit as already underfunded transportation programs face even more cuts if the “fiscal cliff” is reached Jan. 1. No bacon, no pork, he might have to settle for bringing home a small tub of cottage cheese.
As we tweeted a short while ago, Texas has the amazing and dubious distinction of a 4,393-day streak of highway fatalities, with more than 41,000 killed during that 12-year span, an average of nine a day. That’s the equivalent of 100 or so fully loaded jumbo jets. More on Texas here.
Now some additional traffic advisories to keep in mind as we head into the weekend (remember to check that previous post!):
The Parkway East will have lane closures during the following times as it continues work on bridge-pavement transitions:
One lane closed at Edgewood-Swissvale, 10 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Saturday and same hours Saturday night into Sunday morning. At Wilkinsburg, one lane closed from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. today and Saturday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday; two lanes closed 10 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Saturday and same hours Saturday night into Sunday. At the Swinburne Bridge between the Squirrel Hill Tunnels and Oakland-Bates Street, one lane closed at 7 p.m. today and Saturday, reopening at noon the following days.
The ramp from the Liberty Bridge to northbound Interstate 579-Crosstown Boulevard will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday for more repairs to retaining walls.
Grant Street will be closed from Fourth to Forbes avenues in front of the City-County Building from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday while workers bring in the 2012 holiday tree.
Port Authority will close Allegheny Station on the North Side (the one next to Heinz Field at the end of the T) from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday for maintenance. Bus shuttles will get you to North Side Station.
