How will you ever find a Downtown parking space?

The Post-Gazette’s Joe Smydo reported this afternoon that the Pittsburgh Parking Authority will add five of its garages to the 11 already providing real-time information about space availability through a website and smartphone apps:

Launched by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in December 2010, now provides real-time parking information for nine garages in the Cultural District and two on the North Shore.

Today, the authority board voted to spend as much as $12,000 on software to add five more garages -- Oliver Avenue, Mellon Square, Third Avenue, First Avenue and Wood Street-Boulevard of the Allies.

Mark Fleming, vice president of marketing and communications for the Cultural Trust, said the authority’s additions are part of a push to expand ParkPGH beyond the Cultural District to a broader part of Downtown. During the first quarter of 2013, he said, he hopes to have 23 to 25 garages participating in the system.

Here are a few odds and ends from the road work pile:

Traffic will be halted in both directions on the Parkway West in Robinson for overhead electrical work by Duquesne Light on Sunday. The stoppages will occur between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and will last up to 15 minutes just east of the Route 22/30/60 interchange.

Tree-trimming on the Parkway East will cause outbound left-lane closures between Grant Street and Bates Street starting at 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and concluding at 5 a.m. daily.

Replacement of the road surface at a railroad crossing will close Streets Run Road to through traffic in both directions between Route 51 and Delwar Road in Baldwin Borough from 6 a.m. Monday through about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Line painting will cause periodic lane closures on inbound Route 28 at Millvale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Monday and Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.

East Ninth Avenue will be closed for construction at the intersection with westbound Route 366-Bull Creek Road in Tarentum this weekend. The closure had been scheduled for this past weekend, but was postponed. The shutdown is from about 5 p.m. Friday to about 6 a.m. Monday. Traffic will use East 10th Avenue to Lock Street to bypass the closure.

Happy trails,
