Big improvements on the Montour Trail

Several enhancements are in place on the Montour Trail in Cecil. Bridges opened this summer over Georgetown and Morganza roads, eliminating bothersome and potentially dangerous detours over local roads. And a new rail line (shown above) is taking shape a bit west of the Route 50-Route 980 intersection (where the wooden stairs with the bike rail are). The rail line will connect MarkWest Energy’s gas plant on Route 519 in Chartiers with the existing Wheeling & Lake Erie trackage. When that’s finished, the gas company will build a three- to four-mile trail spur next to it.

Road work takes the holiday weekend off with the exception of Banksville Road paving from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. Squirrel Hill Tunnel and Parkway East work will resume on Tuesday.

The westbound Parkway East will close at Grant Street at 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. the following day, except Saturday, when it will reopen at noon. The nightly lane closures in the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel begin at 10 p.m.

Inspection of the Barge Basin Bridge, which carries Route 28 over Guys Run in Harmar, may cause lane closures from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday just south of the Route 910 interchange.

Joint and crack sealing will occur on Route 8 (aka Washington Boulevard, Fifth Avenue and Penn Avenue) from the junction with Allegheny River Boulevard to where it meets Route 30 at Ardmore Boulevard at the Wilkinsburg-Forest Hills line after 7 p.m. weekdays through Sept. 14, possibly causing lane closures. Work concludes by 6 a.m. daily. No work on Labor Day.

A section of Route 50 in Bridgeville will close Thursday night as part of the borough’s streetscape improvement project. Crews will remove temporary pavement markings and install permanent ones. The road will close in both directions between Bower Hill Road and Hickman Street from 9 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Friday. Police will direct traffic to side streets.

Liberty Tunnels maintenance will close one inbound lane at 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Work concludes by 5 a.m. Outbound not restricted.

Washing of the Interstate 79 Neville Island Bridge over the Ohio River may cause short-term lane and shoulder closures in both directions weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Tuesday and continuing through Sept. 14.

Replacement of the culvert that carries Noblestown Road over Robinson Run in North Fayette was expected to be completed and the road reopened by early this evening (Thursday). Noblestown Road has been closed in the bridge area since mid-July and was originally scheduled to remain closed through late September, but PennDOT and the contractor, Mingo Creek Construction LP of Meadow Lands, got it done early.
