Whether you're following New York Fashion Week from the catwalk or your couch, here are some of the trends to be on the look out for during the week.

According to fashion forecasters at WGSN, a trend analysis and research group, there are four categories of clothes that are expected to dominate style for next spring and summer.

Feminine fashions brought to life through tinted pastels, empire waistlines and lots of light laces that can be mixed effortlessly with other fabrics like cotton could be popular, says Lizzy Bowring, WGSN's head of catwalks. Meanwhile designers also likely will infuse their fashions with androgynous elements executed in fresh ways.

Nods to styles of past decades, particularly the 1940s-1970s, will have their moment on the runway, alongside the continuation of sports-influenced apparel that has been important in recent seasons.

When it comes to color, purple is leading the pack. Expect to see it in a range of shades from soft lavenders to deep indigo.
