Philip Pelusi's career as a hairstylist and product artist have taken has yielded collaborations with some of the fashion industry's leading names, including Vivienne Tam, Kati Stern (Venexiana), Jillian Lewis and Benjamin Cho. The Bloomfield native has salons peppered across Pittsburgh and New York, as well as two product lines, P2 Performance X 2 Professional Products by Philip Pelusi and Tela Beauty Organics.
This week, Philip Pelusi Salons will help style models for the first Style Week Pittsburgh, which kicks off Wednesday with a fashion show and jewelry showcase at Perle in Market Square.
"It's a nice initiative," Mr. Pelusi said at a Style Week press event last week at Spa Jema, Downtown. "A thing about Pittsburgh is there is lots of talent, but what makes it difficult is because of the hills and the tunnels, it is fragmented." Events, such as Style Week, that unite the community help overcome these geographic distances, he said.
At Style Week, Mr. Pelusi thinks guests can expect fashions that are more wearable than what people might see on the runways in New York or other fashion capitals.
"The hairstyles we do will reflect that, as well," he said.
At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York in February, Stylebook caught up with Mr. Pelusi about his work, inspiration and favorite Pittsburgh spots in this Q&A (first published February 17, 2013 in print and at www.post-gazette.com):
My favorite thing about my job is ... Creativity, diversity, interacting, sharing with so many people and building something of value.
If I wasn't a hairstylist and product artist, I would want to be ... a jazz musician or movie director.
I am inspired by ... life and our creative team.
Taking part in New York Fashion Week is ... Breakthrough! Invigorating, and challenging. It's fuel for myself and our design team to set trends in hair design and product development!
When I'm in Pittsburgh, I must visit ... I always drive back from the airport and go up over Mount Washington for the amazing view. We often take it for granted, and if I have a guest who has never been here before it always amazes them. Must visit my family!
If I were stranded on an island with only three things, they would be ... wine, my significant other and a chef.
If I could collaborate with anyone, it would be ... David Mamet.
My ideal weekend is ... working out, reflecting, creative dreaming and brunch at Maialino in NYC.
One of the best bits of advice I ever received was ... careful, you might get what you wish for.
