Betsey Johnson is back with 'pretty and punk' dress line

Last year was a roller coaster for designer Betsey Johnson.  It started with the announcement that her licensing company Betsey Johnson LLC was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, followed by the shuttering of the majority of her boutiques and the dismissal of about 350 employees. It wrapped up with a retrospective runway show at New York Fashion Week in September celebrating her career and 70th birthday.

But what a difference a few months can make! Betsey mania invaded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February (pictured above doing her signature post-show split), despite earlier reports she would sit this one out.  At the tents at Lincoln Center, she treated audiences to a 1980s fitness-themed runway show that featured her new activewear line -- as well as a new use for champagne bottles as hand weights.  Also on the horizon is a reality show with daughter Lulu on the Style Network.

The catwalk cartwheel queen's latest contribution to fashion is a line of colorful, flirty dresses for spring and summer. Some are fitted with peplums.  Others are full-skirted and frilly.  Together, they make for a collection that's "pretty and punk, sweet and sexy, always rock 'n roll," Ms. BJ says.

Dresses retail for $99 to $249 at better boutiques, fine department stores and www.betseyjohnson.com
