The still morning air is filled with the heavy perfume of lilies. When I first gardened here 16 years ago, the garden was in its prime during the spring. I've added hydrangeas and lots of other later blooming plants to extend the interest. When the lilies bloom though, it's magical.

'Altari' has become one of my favorites, it's a prolific bloomer and doesn't need full sun to bloom. I got it from Brent and Becky's Bulbs, the variety is sold out now, but make a note of it and order some, you won't be disappointing. 'Stargazer' is probably the most popular lily of this type and I love it too. The fragrance of 'Altari' is unmatched though, at least in my garden.

Nurseries and garden centers are almost giving away plants and bulbs this time of the year. It's a great way to get something in the ground for a little enjoyment this season and for years to come too. I like to add plants because I can test the aroma factor right away.

Lilies are carefree, easy to grow plants which can make the summer garden a special place to be.
