Phipps Opens Registration for November Adult Education Classes

Covering topics from groundcovers and vines to holiday floral arrangements and terrariums, Phipps’ upcoming class schedule holds something for everyone.

 

Pittsburgh, Pa. — Registration is now open for the following diverse adult education classes offered by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s greenest public gardens:

 

Pen & Ink I

Dates & Time: Nov. 9 and 10; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Instructor: Jane Hyland

Fee: $145 Phipps members; $185 nonmembers

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this course will begin with the fundamentals of pen and ink techniques, and progress to achieve different strokes for creating the compositional balance of black and white tones.

Groundcovers and Vines

Dates & Time: Nov. 11, 18 and 25; Dec. 2; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Lynn Purse

Fee: $88 Phipps members; $128 nonmembers

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in the course will become proficient in the identification, cultural requirements and landscape use of a wide variety of groundcovers and vines.

Make Your Own Terrarium

Date & Time: Nov. 13 or 14; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Jimmy Lohr and Jonathan Weber

Fee: $20 Phipps members; $30 nonmembers, plus $25 material fee

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

During this class, students will create a living garden contained under glass. Styles of terrariums and containers, appropriate plant selection, visual design and maintenance will be discussed.

Tropical Bonsai: Weeping Fig

Date & Time: Nov. 16; 10 a.m. – noon

Instructor: Norbert Pietrzak

Fee: $25 Phipps members; $35 nonmember, plus $45 material fee

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this class will learn how to plant, prune and maintain weeping fig bonsai.

Deck the Halls, Walls and More!

Dates & Time: Nov. 25; Dec. 2, 9 and 16 or Nov. 26; Dec. 3, 10 and 17; 7 – 9 p.m.

Instructor: Cindy Miller

Fee: $88 Phipps members; $128 nonmembers, plus $25 material fee per session

Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

Students in this course will learn about different types of greens and floral design techniques while designing four holiday arrangements.
