Beating the winter blahs; Forcing forsythia bloom

Written by Doug Oster on .

blog bloomin forsNothing beats the winter blues like the happy little flowers of forsythia. Photo by Doug OsterFebruary is dragging along bringing with it snow and ice.

There's an easy way to bring spring into the house by forcing forsythia shrubs to bloom.

Cut off as many stems as can fit in a vase of water.

Smash the ends of the stems with a hammer. That allows the stems (which will be in the water) to get the water quickly to the buds.

Place the branches in the vase of water.

In about five days they will bloom with pretty yellow flowers and it will seem like spring inside!

Cut some branches every few days for a constant supply of springtime.

You can watch me forcing the plant to bloom in the video to the right of this page in the viewer.
