At the very end of the season Laurie from Hahn Nursery in Ross pointed out the most beautiful maple tree I've ever seen. Acer Palmatum 'Sango Kaku' looked amazing without any foliage.

The bark is bright red, the perfect tree for winter interest.

I wish I would have bought it and planted the tree in the fall, I've got the perfect place for it. Everytime I come up the driveway in the winter, the red branches will be set off by white snow. I must have it!

It's going to have to go into the ground in the spring. Even though I always prefer to plant trees in the fall, I'm afraid if I wait that long my limited attention span will move me on to another plant.

The leaves are mostly green with reddish and pinkish tinges when they open and turn medium green all summer.

'Sango Kaku' is a small tree only reaching about 20 feet tall and wide. It's hardy from zone 5-8.

As soon as Hahn's opens up again in the spring and the ground can be worked, 'Sango Kaku' is finding a place in my garden.
