Phipps Opens Registration for February Adult Education Classes
Providing instruction on everything from seed-starting to how to create beautiful living plant arrangements, Phipps’ upcoming classes will prepare every plant enthusiast for the coming spring.
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Registration is now open for the following diverse adult education classes offered by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s greenest public gardens:
Soil Ecology
Dates & Time: Feb. 12, 19 and 26; March 5; 7 – 9 p.m.
Instructor: Walter Jarosh
Fee: $88 Phipps members; $128 nonmembers
Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
Students in this course will learn about the physical properties of soils and best management practices for maintaining soil health, as well as discuss how to interpret various soil and fertilizer tests.
Winter Tree ID
Date & Time: Feb. 23; 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Instructor: Leslie Kaplan
Fee: $44 Phipps members; $64 nonmembers
Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
This indoor/outdoor class covering field identification gives students the opportunity to discover differences in the shapes of trees, bark, twigs and buds while learning other useful techniques.
Living Arrangements
Date & Time: Feb. 25; 7 – 9 p.m.
Instructor: Jimmy Lohr
Fee: $22 Phipps members; $32 nonmembers, plus $25 material fee
Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
In this hands-on class, students will learn to care for plants such as African violets, calla lilies, hydrangeas, tropical foliage and orchids, as well as how to use them to make living arrangements.
Digital Photography
Dates & Time: Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23; 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Instructor: Bob Egan
Fee: $120 Phipps members; $160 nonmembers
Location: Botany Hall at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Students in this interactive course will take advantage of the many wonderful photographic opportunities at Phipps to learn about white balance, jpeg vs. raw formats, histograms, and much more.
Seed-Starting
Date & Time: Feb. 21; 7 – 9 p.m.
Instructor: Tara Rockacy
Fee: $20 Phipps members; $30 nonmembers
Location: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
This class will teach students how to sort through catalogs and choose varieties best suited for their growing space, as well as cover equipment, tools and environments needed to start vegetable seedlings.
