PIAA announces semifinal sites

Three WPIAL football teams will play in state semifinal games this weekend. Two games will be Friday and one Saturday.

In Class AAAA on Saturday, North Allegheny (14-0) will take on Wilson High School (13-1) of West Lawn, 3 p.m. at Mansion Park Stadium in Altoona.

In Class AA, Aliquippa (14-0) meets Richland (14-0) Friday, 7 p.m. at North Allegheny.

In Class A, Clairton (14-0) plays Port Allegany (13-0) Friday, 7 p.m. at Deer Lakes.

North Allegheny will play a Wilson team that avenged its only loss of the season Saturday, beating Harrisburg, 39-14. Harrisburg defeated Wilson in the second game of the season. Andy Shay of the Harrisburg Patriot-News has the game story.

Over the past 25 years, Wilson has produced two NFL quarterbacks - Kerry Collins and Chad Henne.

This year's Wilson team doesn't throw all that much. It relies on a solid running game and a strong defense. No team has scored more than two touchdowns on Wilson. But I bet Wilson hasn't faced an offense as good as North Allegheny.

In Class AA, Aliquippa faces a Richland team that has never been this far in the PIAA playoffs, while Aliquippa is in the semifinals for the eighth time since the PIAA started playoffs in 1988. While Richland's record is impressive and the team has a strong offense, I would be shocked if Aliquippa didn't breeze into the title game.

In Class A, Clairton will face a Port Allegany team that features the all-time leading passer in Pennsylvania history in Matt Bodamer. For some reason, I get the feeling Bodamer might have a little more trouble throwing against Clairton than other Port Allegany opponents.
