Hempfield looks tremendous offensively, but standout running back Joe Deflorida hasn't played since early in second quarter because of hand injury.
Hempfield QB Ty George gigantic first half offensively with 252 yards offense. Rushed eight times for 125 yards. Has completed 5 of 9 for 127 yards.
Big first half for Kiski ARea QB Ricardo Carter, who is 8 of 11 for 167.
By the way, impressive band by Kiski Area. Loud and a lot of members. Hey, who says us sports writers never give credit to the bands.

Butler has driven twice inside the North Hills 25, but no points. Still 7-0 North Hills.

KISKI AREA AT HEMPFIELD
PREGAME
Nice. Like the smell of sausages cooking on a huge grill when you enter Spartan Stadium. You don't get that at many high school stadiums. The sandwiches look pretty darn good, too.
I couldn't even tell you the last time I covered a Hempfield game during the regular season. I go to big games. So that pretty much tells you how many big games Hempfield has had in the past few decades. The same can be said with Kiski Area. And like I said earlier in the week on "Varsity Blog," this Friday schedule is lacking in big games.
Anyway ...
Rich Bowen has created a buzz in his first year here at Hempfield. The Spartans are 2-1 and have a chance to go 3-1 for the first time since the 1990s.
Actually, this is a matchup of two first-year coaches. Dave Heavner is in his first year at Kiski Area. Heavner also is trying to restore respectability to a Kiski Area team that won only one game last year. Heavner also is doing a nice job, getting the Cavaliers off to a 2-1 record. They haven't been 3-1 since 2007.
Bowen says Hempfield is a little "banged up" with some injuries. Despite that, I'll go with Hempfield in a close one. I looked this up yesterday. Butler hasn't defeated North Hills AT Martorelli Stadium when Scott Milanovich was quarterbacking Butler.
Other PG reporters out tonight are Craig Meyer at Shady Side Academy-Burrell and Big Brad Everett at Butler-North Hills.
