Jones changes mind about Pitt, will attend Toledo .... Montour beats Char Valley
Penn Hills receiver-defensive back Corey Jones said tonight that he has changed his mind about Pitt and has decided to play next season for Toledo.
Jones, a Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 selection, committed to Pitt when Todd Graham was coach. He said he didn't feel like Pitt wanted him as much since Paul Chryst became coach.
"When coach Graham was there, I would get a lot of phone calls from Pitt," Jones said. "After he left, that slowed down. I just felt like things fell off or something. I felt like I wasn't a main priority for them.
"I wasn't sure of how Pitt was going to handle things, how I was going to fit into their offense and if I was still in their offensive schemes. ... [Pitt's coaches] are cool, but I'm just trying to do what is best for me and I think Toledo's offense is what's best for me."
Jones visited Toledo this weekend. He also said defensive back Chazz Whittaker has decided to attend Toledo. Whittaker had said during the season that he was going to play for West Virginia.
Jones is the second WPIAL player in a week to back out of a commitment to Pitt. A week ago, Upper St. Clair linebacker Dakota Conwell changed his mind and decided to attend the University of Arizona.
Basketball: Montour defeats Chartiers Valley
At the Pittsburgh Basketball Classic tonight at Robert Morris, the Montour Spartans knocked off Chartiers Valley, 61-49. Chartiers Valley was undefeated and the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked WPIAL Class AAAA team. Montour was No. 2 in Class AAA and lost its first game Saturday night to New Castle.
A key for Montour was Dillon Buechel, who missed the New Castle game because he was on a football recruiting visit to the University of New Hampshire. Buechel, a standout quarterback in football, scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Montour players in double figures. The 49 points was the lowest offensive output of the season for Chartiers Valley. Sophomore guard Jerrad Tuite scored 18 for Chartiers Valley.
Although Buechel visited New Hampshire, he does not have a scholarship offer from the team. He did pick up an offer recently from Maine and will most likely choose between Maine and Duquesne.
