Live blog - Coaches vs. Cancer Classic - New Castle beats Montour

Live blog Saturday night from the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Geneva College. Beaver Falls meets Farrell in the first game here at 6:30 and will be followed by the 1-2 showdown between New Castle and Montour. New Castle is ranked No. 1 in Class AAA of the WPIAL and Montour No. 2.

NEW CASTLE VS. MONTOUR

FINAL SCORE: NEW CASTLE 68, MONTOUR 58

9:38 p.m. - Can't see Montour coming back. New Castle has opened up 60-48 lead. Three minutes left.

9:35 p.m. - Devin Wilson been pretty quiet this half. NC done a good job on him. Has only four points this half.

9:33 p.m. - New Castle has opened up 53-43 lead.

9:27 p.m. - End of the third quarter and New Castle leads, 46-41. Shawn Anderson 3-pointer for NC with six seconds left.

9:21 p.m. - New Castle has gone cold from 3. 1 of 8 this half.

9:20 p.m. - Three minutes left in third. New Castle 41-37

9:14 p.m. - Anthony Richards just picked Devin Wilson's pocked and nailed a 3 in front of him. NC ahead, 40-30, third quarter.

HALFTIME: NEW CASTLE 33, MONTOUR 28

Anthony Richards nine points in first half for New Castle. Corey Eggleston leads with 11. New Castle made 13 of 25 and 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Montour led by Devin Wilson with seven and Tyler Haas seven. Montour shot 12 of 23 and 3 of 10 from 3.

9:00 p.m. - New Castle goes on quick run near end of first half. 3-pointer by David Richards. Eggleston scores. Then a putback by Jermaine Cuffie.

8:58 p.m. - Tie game. 26-26.

8:54 p.m. - Montour on 6-0 run. Driving layup by Devin Wilson. Timeout NC. Montour ahead, 26-21, 3:20 left in half. Love Wilson's game.

8:52 p.m. - Back and forth with lead but Montour ahead 24-21. 4:10 left in half.

8:49 p.m. - Devin Wilson doing his thing as Montour point guard. Controls the game. New Castle tries to double. Tough to double him.

8:45 p.m. - END OF THE FIRST QUARTER: NEW CASTLE 17, MONTOUR 15

8:43 p.m. - 17-14 New Castle, late in first quarter.

8:41 p.m. - Montour size advantage. Montour probably liking pace of game so far.

8:39 p.m. - New Castle ahead, 10-9. Two 3's so far for NC.

8:31 p.m. - Game about to start. Montour starter Dillon Buechel not here. On football recruiting visit to New Hampshire. Ryan Lewis, who became eligible only last week, is starting.

BEAVER FALLS VS. FARRELL

FINAL SCORE: BEAVER FALLS 64, FARRELL 31

Sheldon Jeter 20, Drew Cook 18 and Kevin Cancel 13 for Beaver Falls.

For Farrell, no one in double figures.

8:03 p.m. - They're opening more bleachers here. Crowd getting too big.

7:56 p.m. - Beaver Falls sophomore Elijah Cottrill just threw down a one-handed dunk on a break. A promising sophomore.

7:50 p.m. - End of the third quarter, Beaver Falls 45, Farrell 22. Playoffs don't start for a few weeks, but I'd say Beaver Falls has to be the team to beat in Class AA, right? Have a lot of components to not only win WPIAL, but maybe state, too.

7:49 p.m. - Always nice to see when New Castle has a good team in a sport. Whole town gets into it and fans show up in droves.

7:39 p.m. - This one is history. Question is when will Farrell get to 20? Beaver Falls ahead 39-15 with four minutes left in the third. Farrell some decent athletes, but no size.

7:33 p.m. - Pretty nice crowd here for a Saturday night in January. Should be even more crowded for the final game.

7:22 p.m. - HALFTIME: BEAVER FALLS 31, FARRELL 12

7:13 p.m. - Farrell has no one to deal with Sheldon Jeter.

By the way, I've seen coaches here wearing sneakers, to show support in Coaches vs. Cancer. No sneakers by Beaver Falls coach Doug Biega? Wonder why? He's too classy of a dresser I think.

7:08 p.m. - End of the first quarter. Beaver Falls leads, 15-8. Farrell has defeated Beaver Falls the past few years. Can't see it happening this year.

Sheldon Jeter making first appearance of game at start of second quarter. Sat for the first quarter because he was a minute late t a workout today.

7:00 p.m. - 9-5 Beaver Falls midway through first quarter.

6:58 p.m. - A few people have told me that Dillon Buechel won't be playing in the second game for Montour. He is Montour's standout quarterback and is on a college visit. He is one of Montour's best players. That's certainly a loss for Montour. Wonder if he'll be back in time for tomorrow's game against Chartiers Valley (5 p.m. start).

6:51 p.m. - Beaver Falls standout Sheldon Jeter got another scholarship offer tonight - from Penn State. But he won't be starting tonight. He'll sit the first quarter against Farrell. Coach Doug Biega said Jeter stayed at his grandmother's last night and was one minute late for a workout today.

I give Biega a lot of credit. No one above the program. And too many kids these days aren't held accountable for not being on time for things.

6:50 p.m. - Game about to get underway here. You can actually feel a little sadness in the air here. Word is traveling fast about Joe Paterno supposedly being near death, according to reports.
