NBA player DeJuan Blair was in the stands at Cupples Stadium on the South Side today, watching University Prep win the City League football championship with a 14-0 victory against Allderdice.
Nice to see Blair in attendance, still supporting City League athletics. It wasn't all that long ago that Blair turned Schenley into a City League power and led the Spartans to a state championship. Schenley has since closed.
Blair looked good. Actually, looked in great shape. He must be working out a lot during the NBA lockout. "I'm not fat any more," he joked.
And guess who was with Blair? None other than "Onion."
Who is "Onion?" Well, he was the terrific point guard at Schenley on the state championship team with Blair. He is Jamaal Bryant. But no one knows him as Jamaal. He has always been simply "Onion."
"Onion" lives with Blair in Texas (Blair plays for the San Antonio Spurs). "Onion" said Blair and some others shot a rap video yesterday that will be on "YouTube" in a few weeks.
As for the game, it was a yawner until the fourth quarter. It was scoreless after three quarters, but University Prep scored two TDs in the fourth to pull out the win. Akil Young, who relieved Dante Forte at quarterback at the start of the second half, thew a 7-yard TD pass to Tayvon Taylor to put University Prep on the board with 5:55 left in the game. Jaylen Coleman then ran 90 yards for a TD with 2:36 left in the game.
Coleman finished with 180 yards on 25 carries. But the story of the game was University Prep's defense. UPrep held Allderdice to 83 yards offense. TOTAL OFFENSE.
