Recruit backs out of PSU commitment ..... Playoff predictions

Tonight's live blog will be from Hopewell at Franklin Regional. 7:30 start. If you have scores or notes of other games, send email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Twitter @mwhiteburgh. For now, some news and playoff predictions.

Penn State has lost a pretty darn good recruit because of the mess involving the football program. It makes you wonder if this could be the start of the recruiting fallout?

Joey O'Connor of Windsor High School in Colorado has backed out of his verbal commitment. O'Connor committed to the Nittany Lions in the summer and said his change of heart is all because of the child sex abuse scandal.

Jason Shedd of The Colorodan in Fort Collins has the story. Interesting to see O'Connor say he can't get away from the Penn State stuff.

You wonder if any other recruits will do the same? Shaler's J.P. Holtz, a Penn State recruit, said yesterday he will wait and see how this thing plays out.

Playoff predictions

Here are my picks for tonight's WPIAL football quarterfinals and also one City League semifinal game. I was 25-7 in last week's WPIAL first round.

North Allegheny vs. Seneca Valley - It might not be a blowout like when these two met earlier this season, but it will still be an NA win. Winner: North Allegheny.

Penn-Trafford vs. Gateway - Gateway has been awfully impressive lately. But maybe this is still the Warriors' year. Winner: Penn-Trafford.

Central Catholic vs. Mt. Lebanon - Luke Hagy's fine career comes to an end. Winner: Central Catholic.

Upper St. Clair vs. McDowell - I know one prominent Quad-A coach not in the playoffs who believes Upper St. Clair is going to win it all. Winner: Upper St. Clair.

Central Valley vs. Ringgold - Central Valley just too good. Winner: Central Valley.

West Mifflin vs. Montour - Montour better be careful. West Mifflin is good enough to win. But it will be a Montour-Central Valley semifinal. Winner: Montour.

Franklin Regional vs. Hopewell - This is such a tough one to pick. I keep going back and forth. I picked Franklin Regional on our Varsity Xtra show earlier this week. Am I a sissy if I change my mind? Winner: Hopewell.

Knoch vs. Thomas Jefferson - Thomas Jefferson not in the semifinals? It will seem strange. Winner: Knoch.

Aliquippa vs. Washington - Don't be surprised if Washington keeps this fairly close. Winner: Aliquippa.

Ellwood City vs. Greensburg Central Catholic - Coach Muzzy Colosimo comes back from his one-game suspension to a win. Winner: GCC.

Jeannette vs. Shady Side Academy - I'm this close to jumping on the Reggie Mitchell Shady Side Academy bandwagon. I said "close." Winner: Jeannette.

Seton-LaSalle vs. South Fayette - Seton-LaSalle won the first meeting with a strong second half. South Fayette is primed to keep this one close, but the Rebels will prevail. Winner: Seton-LaSalle.

Clairton vs. Springdale - Springdale upset the Bears in the 2007 semifinals. No upset this time, just win No. 42 in a row. Winner: Clairton.

Rochester vs. Avonworth - A Rochester-Clairton semifinal could be interesting. Winner: Rochester.

Sto-Rox vs. Brentwood - The Vikings offense will score in the 30s again. Winner: Sto-Rox.

Bishop Canevin vs. Fort Cherry - You have to wonder about Bishop Canevin after it struggled to beat Char-Houston last week. But the Crusaders' playoff lives will last one more week. Winner: Bishop Canevin.

Brashear vs. Allderdice - This was close the first time and will be again. But the final outcome will be the same. Winner: Brashear.
